A chi o a che cosa si riferisce il titolo di questo disco? Ovviamente il fattore singolo non può essere che A.Latimer, il solo musicista rimasto della formazione originale dei Camel. Infatti, anche l'indimenticabile batterista A.Ward ha definitivamente abbandonato l'amico Andy, dopo il valido concept-album "Nude", per gravi motivi personali.
"The Single Factor (Deram)" viene pubblicato il 7 maggio 1982 e presenta appunto il solo Latimer alla 'guida' totale del gruppo, anche se è affiancato da una sorprendente parata di strumentisti, con la presenza anche di una gradita sorpresa che rivelerò più avanti. I musicisti sono: C.Rainbow (Vocals, Backing Vocals), D.Paton (Bass, Fretless Bass, Vocals, Backing Vocals), D.Mattacks, S.Phillips (Drums), A.Phillips (Rickenbacker 12-string, Grand Piano, Poly-Moog, Organ) e altri. Sicuramente questo è il disco che possiede meno creatività e con le composizioni più 'deboli' di tutta la discografia dei Camel per svariati motivi. La 'magica' struttura progressiva è quasi totalmente scomparsa a favore di una musica e di un formato canzoni sostanzialmente Pop-Rock. Il CD è composto da dodici pezzi per un totale di circa cinquantadue minuti. Comunque non mancano episodi validi e leggermente progressivi come gli strumentali "Selva" e "Sasquatch". In quest'ultimo pezzo compare a sorpresa l'amico P.Bardens all'Organo a al Mini-Moog. Il titolo di questo brano è un simpatico riferimento ai .... Questo dovrete scoprirlo voi! Anche "Heroes" cantata da Paton non è da disdegnare, soprattutto perchè è in grado, nonostante il semplice formato canzone, di emozionare l'ascoltatore anche grazie a un bel testo, carico di significati. Imagine of mine are you just a myth? Aiming for the stars and a need to exist. Singing your life to its final bar, Staging all the scenes to avoid who you are...
"Manic" invece, è una canzone cantata da Latimer con un tono vagamente Dark, con un testo che secondo me si riferisce a Ward. Commovente il breve strumentale "End Peace" che chiude il disco con la chitarra 'strappalacrime' di Latimer. La mediocre copertina del disco raffigurante il volto di Latimer è ottenuta da trentasette linee verticali.
In conclusione un lavoro assai lontano dalle atmosfere dei dischi anni '70 e che solo a tratti riesce ad 'allontanarsi' dalla classica struttura dei brani Pop-Rock caratteristici degli anni '80. Nonostante la stima e il rispetto che nutro per l'Arte e le grandi capacità musicali di Andrew, il mio voto non può essere alto. Voto disco 3 su 5 (microstelle).
