Questa epigrafe adorna un disco molto particolare. Innanzitutto è importante sottolinearne la data d'uscita 1986 ossia l'anno d'oro del Thrash Metal. Dunque la tendenza era quella di comporre brani velocissimi e aggressivi. Ma i Candlemass non si fanno influenzare e danno alla luce una pietra miliare del Doom Metal.
Questo disco ne rappresenta infatti uno degli apici e se oggi possiamo godere dei (capo)lavori di gruppi come i primi Anathema, primi Paradise Lost e My Dying Bride lo dobbiamo in parte anche a questa opera.
L'iniziale SOLITUDE è già di per se esplicativa e ci mostra da un lato melodia e dall'altro un che di cupo e opprimente. Una nota di merito va anche al testo tremendamente pessimista e manifesto di quelli che sono e saranno gli argomenti tipici di questo genere pressoché unico.
Il disco prosegue di brano sempre più cupo e solenne dando a ogni composizione un'aria epica e suprema. Il tutto attraverso brani ormai leggendari come UNDER THE OAK o la stupenda suite finale A SORCERER'S PLEDGE.
Dopo questo disco la carriera dei Candlemass subirà diversi cambi di line-up (di cui il più significativo è l'ingresso del cantante Messiah Marcolin) fino allo sciogliemento definitivo (avvenuto dopo una brevissima reunion) annunciato qualche giorno fa, restando comunque una delle band fondamentali di un genere visionario ed evocativo come nessun altro.
