Lee Dorrian: sinonimo di qualità e di costanza. Prima la sua avventura con i Napalm Death e poi quella con i Cathedral lo hanno elevato a uomo di culto della scena metal mondiale, in particolare quella anglosassone.
In entrambi i gruppi ha lasciato un'impronta importante, tanto che alcuni lo considerano uno dei primi inventori del grindcore con i Napalm Death e altri gli riconoscono una dote importante anche nell'aver ampliato il genere doom con i Cathedral. Personalmente ho sempre preferito il Dorrian doom che con album come "Forest of equilibrium", "The ethereal mirror" e "The carnival bizarre" ha delineato contorni importanti del genere più lento e monolitico del metal.
Eppure la carriera degli inglesi non è priva di lavori che non hanno convinto: proprio "Supernatural birth machine", il cd precedente a "Caravan beyond redemption" non aveva particolarmente colpito, motivo per cui il ritorno sulla scena di Dorrian e soci era atteso con una certa dose di curiosità. Quando il 6 dicembre del 1998, CBR ha visto la luce, le lunghe ombre del capitolo precedente vennero subito spazzate via, grazie alla potenza e alla genuinità del quinto album in studio firmato Cathedral.
Ciò che risalta fin dall'inizio è l'allontanamento dal doom pressante degli esordi, in favore di un approccio più heavy metal oriented con notevoli sfumature stoner rock, dovute principalmente alla chitarra di Gaz Jennings. Queste "nuove" sfumature si percepiscono già nel turbinio metallico dell'opener "Voodoo fire", che richiama gli immancabili Kyuss come riferimento ad uno stoner rock grezzo ma di assoluto impatto. Anche la successiva "The unnatural world" colpisce pienamente nel segno con una compattezza e un impianto sonoro assolutamente perfetto su cui si erge un chorus anthemico che si adatta a meraviglia all'atmosfera dell'album, mai troppo pesante come in passato, ma allo stesso tempo mai in cerca di falici soluzioni catchy. I Cathedral picchiano e lo fanno con cognizione di causa, come dimostrano "Satanikus robotikus" e "Captain clegg", quest'ultima con un ritmo trascinante e a tratti anche irriverente.
E' comunque innegabile che i lavori precedenti possedessero qualcosa in più sotto la voce qualità, ma anche "Caravan beyond redemption" sa farsi valere, pur distaccandosi in parte dagli esordi. Infatti la presenza di canzoni come "Kaleidoscope of desire" e "The omega man" dimostrano che la volontà di cambiare comporta anche la possibilità di sbagliare, motivo per cui questo album non raggiunge i fasti di altri lavori della Cattedrale. In fin dei conti però siamo di fronte ad un disco vario, che garantisce discreti pugni allo stomaco e delle soluzioni comunque mai noiose: alcuni pezzi sono superiori di altri, ma nel complesso "Caravan beyond redemption" risulta un gran bel discone, con un minutaggio importante. Un platter che nella lunga storia dei Cathedral ci puo' stare benissimo.
