Il secondo album dei Chicago, pubblicato ad inizio 1970, è ancora pienamente nello stile variegato e progressivo, solo episodicamente commerciale col quale questo settetto intese di iniziare la carriera. I quattro compositori del gruppo rivaleggiavano ancora fraternamente per ottenere esposizione, col risultato che l'ellepì usci doppio così come era stato per l'esordio e come sarà anche per il successivo terzo lavoro (poi si esagererà del tutto con una quarta opera dal vivo spalmata in ben quattro vinili, otto facciate!).
In scaletta compare il capolavoro "25 or 6 to 4", episodica ma epocale sortita in campo hard rock che può essere anche vista come la madre di tutte le discese armoniche LA-SOL-FA-MI. Ve ne sono tantissime consimili nella musica rock, ma questo riff (che in realtà infila in mezzo anche un FA diesis) batte tutti gli altri fratelli, anche grazie al fatto che nei raccordi tra una strofa e l'altra viene arricchito da una drammatica, stupenda fanfara di squisita armonizzazione jazz, sparata bravamente dai tre fiatisti (sax, tromba e trombone) della formazione. La voce solista per l'occasione è quella del bassista Peter Cetera, dotato di timbro potente e tenorile mentre l'esteso ed ispiratissimo assolo di chitarra, pregno di clamoroso swing mezzo jazz e mezzo blues, parte pacato col suono chiuso del magnete dei bassi, s'infuoca passando a quello più penetrante del pick-up degli acuti ed esplode con l'innesto del pedale wah wah. Sono due minuti di epocale qualità, grinta, fluidità ed istinto, tali da fare esclamare al buon Jimi Hendrix (direttamente all'incredulo Terry Kath, raggiunto in camerino appena dopo un concerto) "Tu lo sai che sei più bravo di me, vero?".
Kath non era magari bravo come Hendrix, però era incosciente ancor più di lui: s'è ammazzato giocando alla roulette russa ancor trentunenne, nel ‘78. Oltre alle pingui doti strumentali possedeva pure una magnifica voce soul, che qui può essere ammirata qui e là e soprattutto sugli altri due hit del disco, a titolo "Make Me Smile" e "Colour My World". La prima ha un'introduzione jazz progressiva (completamente rimossa nella edizione in singolo) che però si compatta presto in un pop-rhythm&blues cantato da dio e arricchito di bei cori; la seconda è un lentone cadenzato da un arpeggio pianistico in vago stile Bachiano, un pochino noioso. La cosa buffa è che entrambi questi brani sono estratti da una suite di sette movimenti denominata "Ballet For A Girl In Buchannon", messa insieme dal trombonista del settetto James Pankov... buona parte del resto della composizione è decisamente meno commerciale, tra svolazzi di flauto, break di batteria, fanfare di ottoni.
Una seconda, abbondante uscita progressiva è costituita da un'altra suite, stavolta in quattro movimenti, a titolo "Memories Of Love". Stavolta è il chitarrista Kath a comporre ed esercitarsi sul versante decisamente progressivo, in questo aiutato da un musicista classico ovvero il direttore d'orchestra Peter Matz. Era del resto l'epoca nella quale Deep Purple, Nice, Pink Floyd e altri ci davano dentro di brutto nel tentativo di accoppiare il rock con vere e proprie partiture d'orchestra (e non i soliti violini e legni di sottofondo) di sapore sinfonico.
Tutto ciò sta a conformare un disco enormemente vario, che oscilla dalle sfumature beatlesiane al jazz, dalle pomposità orchestrali all'hard rock, dal rhythm&blues moderato (perché eseguito da bianchi...) alle prime avvisaglie di pop americano "adulto" e dolciastro che poi sarà il genere prevalente della formazione nei tantissimi anni della sua carriera. Per chi conosce i Chicago solo superficialmente anche quest'opera, come del resto tutti i loro primi sei o sette dischi, costituisce per certo motivo di grande stupore.
