Questo disco non è un capolavoro… è IL capolavoro.
Finalmente Alexi Lahio riesce a mischiare tutti i componenti che hanno reso il combo finlandese tra i più famosi ed eclettici al mondo tirando fuori dal cilindro una creatura perfettamente assemblata, dove le parti metalliche sono tirate a lucido e le sottili, quasi impercettibili venature black, memori di un passato ora davvero molto lontano, fanno capolino qua e là, tra uno sweep e un riff di chiara ispirazione neoclassica.
La prodigiosa creatura cresce d’ascolto in ascolto, passando dalla rabbia e dal furore primordiale di Warheart alla piena presa di coscienza delle proprie capacità tecniche in Silent Night Bodom Night, dove un mid tempo con doppio pedale in stile tritacarne vi garantirà un discreto materiale per il vostro headbanging casalingo.
Alla giovane e inesperta creatura concediamo pure una piccola divagazione nei territori scanzonati e grezzi del "punk" di Hatebreeder per poi venire ripagati dall’ipnotica Bed of Razors che nel chorus si abbandona a territori più compassati, tranquilli, un momento di respiro per far riposare le nostre orecchie, affascinate quanto stupefatte per poi continuare a farci torturare piacevolmente dal power metal d'assalto di Towards Dead End dove Alexi Lahio fa il bello e il cattivo tempo sweppando a 360° e umiliando chiunque pensava di potere diventare un discreto chitarrista.
La dolcezza dell’intro di Black Widow ci illude sulla vera natura di questa canzone che a mio parere è una delle meglio riuscite anche grazie all'eccellente lavoro di songwriting di Janne Warmann che tra archi "orchestra hit" e fiati ci avvolge in una raffinata atmosfera neoclassica.
Tuttavia non è ancora arrivato il momento di congratularsi con chi ha creato tutto ciò, se qualcuno aveva ancora qualche dubbio sulla grandezza di questo masterpiece ci penseranno la coppia Wrath Within e Children Of Bodom a convincerci che i nostri 18€ li abbiamo spesi davvero bene. Non penso ci sia niente da dire su Downfall, se non che faremmo meglio a ricordarcela questa canzone… perché sarà l’ultima che potremo sentire dei veri Children Of Bodom, creatura che Alexi Lahio da Follow The Reaper in avanti sta portando per mano verso un'evoluzione stilistica quanto mai pericolosa e dal risultato incerto.
Resta solo da definire la catalogazione per questo capolavoro… direi un bel "power extreme metal" un bel calderone dove le influenze più disparate si uniscono per un solo scopo: accontentare chi combatte quotidianamente contro nodi, lavandini intasati e shampoo vari per avere materiale a sufficienza da destinare ad un prolifico headbanging.

Il "monumento alla violenza barocca" come io amo definire quest album.
Downfall, l’elevazione ultraterrena e l’imponenza di Laiho e soci concentrata in poco meno di cinque minuti di pura estasi.
