Nell'ottica dell'orizzonte emocore moderno, il 2003 vede l'attesissima quanto dirompente conferma di uno dei guppi rivelazione dell'intero scenario rock mondiale. Si parla dei Coheed & Cambria. Si parla di Claudio Sanchez, Travis Stever, Michael Todd e Joshua Eppard.

Risulta quanto mai difficile per me recensire un album del quartetto del New Jersey, perché, come la maggior parte della critica musicale, mi uniformo al pensiero di quanti affermano che alla base del successo dei Coheed & Cambria ci sia non solo una tecnica musicale di altissimo livello che riguarda l'intera sezione ritmica del gruppo, ma anche e soprattutto un'ecletticità onnipresente, che scaturisce dalla mente geniale di Sanchez & co., e che in definitiva risulta essere quella componente fondamentale e caratteristica che spinge il gruppo al di fuori dello stereotipato confine del "genere musicale". Così è nel fantastico "In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth 3", secondo lavoro del gruppo, album della maturità in cui i suoni vengono levigati con particolare maestria ed in cui confluiscono influenze di diversi generi musicali, tutte poggiate su una base emocore da brividi che costituisce il fondo comune, il collante dell'intero viaggio. Si, perché di viaggio si tratta. Perché sin dall'ascolto dell'intro, ciò che risalta all'orecchio di chi ascolta è che a spezzare la monotonia del ritmo di vita quotidiana irrompe la melodia dei Coheed, che ci trasportano in un luogo lontano nel tempo e nello spazio. Poi la title-track. "In Keeping secrets of silent earth 3". Le note scorrono nelle mie orecchie mentre scrivo. Il concetto si ripete dalle prime battute della Gibson di Claudio. Non sono più davanti il pc di casa. Non so dove sono, ma sono travolto dal turbine emotivo scatenato dai Coheed and Cambria. Le chitarre di Sanchez e Stever graffiano come unghie; si alternano suoni dolci a riff taglienti che improvvisamente e come per magia si amalgamano. Del resto, chi poteva maneggiare l'emocore per 8 minuti senza disperdere l'intensità del coinvolgimento emotivo? Non è roba per tutti, ci riescono solo i Coheed. L'ultimo minuto e mezzo della traccia è un'escalation di sensazioni travolgenti e emozioni intense: le chitarre, il basso, la batteria, la tastiera, il coro di voci, la voce di Claudio: tutto semplicemente perfetto. Potrebbe sembrare che mi sia dilungato troppo, ma questa è in assoluto secondo me la migliore canzone dell'album, quella che mi spinge a premere sempre il pulsante repeat del mio lettore.

Ma non si esaurisce qui la bellezza e la forza del quartetto, nelle due successive tracce succede di tutto: riff che ricordano Santana, ritmi incalzanti e soliti ruggiti, il tutto condito dalla sempre intraprendente voce del singer mentre è sempre costante il dialogo tra le chitarre, che producono il miglior emocore degli ultimi 10 anni. "The crowing" merita menzione particolare perché emerge quella vena metal-dark che esploderà nel successivo lavoro "Good Apollo, I'm burning star IV volume One form fear trough the eyes of madness" (da notare le accelerazioni improvvise) e per lo strepitoso finale ("Dear Ambellina, the prise wishes you, to watch over me!" resteranno impresse nella mia memoria a lungo!!!). Con "Blood red summer" e "A favor house atlantic" i Co&Ca dimostrano di riuscire a spaccare di brutto con melodie orecchiabilissime, facilmente assimilabili e all'apparenza semplici, ma sempre legate alla personalità del gruppo. Le tre "Velorium camper" continuano il viaggio nei meandri del mondo dei Coheed & Cambria, o di Coheed e di Cambria, che sono appunto i personaggi immaginari inventati da Claudio e il cui intreccio di avvenimenti costituisce la storia che fa da sfondo alla musica del gruppo del New Jersey. Il cd si conclude con la bonus track e "The light & the glass", che riassume in sé un po' tutte le prerogative musicali dei quattro.

Ascoltando "In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth 3" ci si trova quindi di fronte ad un album di grande caratura, permeato dallo spirito più autentico di un gruppo che come ho già scritto fa della versatilità e dell'ecletticità la propria bandiera e che guarda all'emocore in maniera originale e sicuramente nuova, riuscendo a rapire l'ascoltatore per tutto l'intero ascolto del disco, proiettandolo con forza in un'atmosfera surreale, onirica, fantascientifica, che solo i Coheed & Cambria riescono a creare.
