"Parachutes" è stato pubblicato il 10 luglio 2000 ed è il primo album della band inglese "Coldplay". L'album si suddivide in 11 tracce caratterizzate da una profonda continuità sonora incentrata principalmente sul genere Brit Pop e Pop Rock. Quest'album ha avuto un ottimo riscontro della critica e pubblico riuscendo in fatti a raggiungere la posizione numero uno della classifica inglese e portando molta fama al gruppo. Sono stati estratti quattro singoli: "Shiver" (# 35), "Yellow" (# 4), "Trouble" (# 10) e "Don't Panic". Ma veniamo all'analisi brano per brano.
Don't Panic L'album di debutto dei Coldplay non inizia certo nel migliore dei modi anzi, forse nel peggiore. Un breve brano carico di ottimismo (sottolineato soprattutto dalle numerose ripetizioni del verso "we live in a beautiful world") ma troppo ripetitivo. Il quarto ed ultimo singolo estratto dall'album si rivela noioso e poco originale... VOTO 4
Shiver Il secondo brano parte subito con una melodia dolce e allegra ben eseguita con la chitarra, che si trasforma a poco a poco in un ritmo abbastanza energico. Il testo parla di un amore non ricambiato tra due persone: questa è la causa del "brivido" che da il titolo al pezzo. Una delle prime canzoni composte dalla band, è sicuramente una dei pezzi più pop e orecchiabili dell'album; non a caso la canzone è stata scelta come primo singolo estratto. Molto bella... VOTO 8.5
Spies Senza dubbio la canzone più cupa dell'intero album, è caratterizzata da una strofa costruita con note di chitarra acustica in "stile" Radiohead e da un ritornello accompagnato da note elettriche (sempre di chitarra). "Spies came out of the water"... Chi sono le spie che affliggono Martin e soci?... Il testo rende anch'esso al meglio il carattere quasi tenebroso della canzone. L'ideale colonna sonora per viaggiare di notte, in macchina, su una strada desolata... VOTO 7.5
Sparks Canzone sulla stessa linea più o meno della precedente ma totalmente priva di cambi di ritmo. Una ballata abbastanza soporifera trascurabile rispetto ad altri brani... VOTO 5.5
Yellow Il brano che ha portato i Coldplay alla ribalta in patria e fuori. È sicuramente il brano migliore del disco e quindi giustamente è stato scelto come secondo singolo. La canzone è basata su un riff di chitarra sognante accompagnato dalla batteria in puro stile brit pop; va inoltre considerata l'ottima prova vocale di Chris Martin. Proprio il cantante decise di intitolare la canzone "Yellow" dopo aver dato un'occhiata alle pagine gialle. Il testo è una dolce venerazione delle meraviglie della donna amata paragonate al brillio delle stelle... VOTO 9
Trouble Un altro brano molto importante per la carriera dei Coldplay. Il terzo singolo estratto dall'album è una ballata costruita su un famoso riff di pianoforte, ritenuta da molti un vero capolavoro. In realtà i Coldplay hanno scritto cose migliori, ma questo brano possiede un'atmosfera misteriosa derivata dal perfetto suono del pianoforte e perché no... determinata anche da un video molto espressivo che raffigura Chris legato ad una sedia in una notte gelida. Il testo sembra rappresentare una vera e propria apologia verso qualcuno verso cui abbiamo agito nel modo sbagliato arrecandogli danni... VOTO 8
Parachutes Breve intermezzo cantato molto dolcemente da Chris che introduce la seconda parte dell'album
High Speed Forse la canzone più rock dell'album: vengono lasciati da parte i falsetti delle ballate e le atmosfere gioiose di Yellow e Shiver a favore di una maggior forza nel cantato, soprattutto nel ritornello. Lo stile di questa canzone va in direzione del rock alternative che ha reso celebre i Radiohead. Una canzone buona che certamente non sfigura rispetto ad altri grandi pezzi presenti in questo album... VOTO 7
We Never Change Si torna ad ascoltare una ballata. Una canzone discreta resa preziosa dalle qualità espressive della dolce voce di Chris Martin che riesce a portare valore ad una canzone tutto sommato non eccezionale. Il testo parla della voglia di vivere al meglio e dell'importanza di rimanere sé stessi... L'ideale per chi si vuole regalare un momento di tranquillità e riflessione... VOTO 6,5
Everything's Not Lost Semplicemente una perla da custodire gelosamente: la degna conclusione di quest'album; se fosse uscita come singolo, sarebbe sicuramente diventata un classico dei Coldplay. La canzone parte piano, con la voce di Chris accompagnata dalle note del pianoforte, poi arriva il ritornello e si aggiunge il magnifico suono della chitarra elettrica a disegnare nuove melodie. Nell'ultima parte la canzone si trasforma in una melodia gioiosa e felice quando Chris canta "Singing out ah ah ah yeah", seguito poi dal resto della band. Il testo sottolinea il fatto che anche se ci si trova in una situazione difficile, non sempre tutto è perduto. L'ideale soundtrack per un happy handing... VOTO 8,5
Life Is For Living Breve traccia nascosta in fondo alla traccia precedente: una buona canzoncina che avrebbe sicuramente meritato più impegno da parte della band nel suo sviluppo; ma così purtroppo non è stato. Forse sarebbe stato meglio chiudere alla grande con "Everything's Not Lost", perché così rimane un po' l'amaro in bocca... VOTO 6

Nonostante tutto, è un disco bello.
I Coldplay riprendono la formula compositiva dei primi Radiohead e realizzano un disco piacevole e molto ascoltabile.
