1981, dopo il successo planetario di "Autoamerican", inciso con i Blondie, Debbie Harry tenta la carriera solistica e sceglie di collaborare con Bernard Edwards e Nile Rodgers, menti degli "Chic", metà delle canzoni sono scritte dagli Chic e metà da Debbie Harry e Chris Stein, chitarrista dei Blondie e all'epoca compagno della Harry. La copertina è uno dei primi lavori di H. R. Giger, nell'immediato dopo "Alien", i suoni sono inediti per la blondie, qui alle prese col funk e con il rap , Giger fece i video per il singolo rap simil-rap "Backfired" e la languida ballata ballata "Now I Know you Know". Tra i brani migliori firmati Chic ci sono "Surrender", simile allo stile dell'album di Diana Ross "Diana", quello con "Upside Down" per capirci, e "The Jam was Moving", tra quelli firmati dalla coppia Harry-Stein invece "Jump Jump" e "Inner City Spillover", poi le due coppie firmano i brani stile etno "Oasis" e la marcetta "Under Arrest". Un pò indecifrabili invece il rap "Military Rap" e soprattutto l'oscura "Chrome". Nel complesso un album originale e poco classificabile, che ancora oggi affascina e divide gli ascoltatori.
