Recensire un disco di nome 'Violator' vuol dire recensire i Depeche Mode. La band nel 1990 riesce definitivamente a imporre un nuovo modo di fare musica e ne fa di esso un proprio marchio inconfondibile.
In questo lavoro l’elettronica, di origine kraftwerkiana, sperimentata e maturata nei dischi precedenti incontra e si confonde meravigliosamente con i canoni più tipici del rock.
L'opera comincia con la sontuosa "World In My Eyes", uno dei pezzi preferiti dagli stessi DM, e già da qui si comprende la rivoluzione in atto. Passando per la "Sweetest Perfection" si giunge a "Personal Jesus". Il brano ci trasmette il calore del rock’n'roll con la freddezza di un elettronica che a partire dal minuto 3. 22 si autocelebra nella costruzione di un finale che rappresenterà uno dei vertici assoluti in musica per ciò che concerne l’utilizzo dei sintetizzatori. Nella quarta traccia che risponde al nome di "Halo", il suono degli archi ci avvolge, e ci consegna alla quiete di "Waiting For The Night" nella quale il tempo si ferma per far posto alla magia della notte in cui tutto sembra "bearable". Al risveglio ci accoglie "Enjoy The Silence", che non ha bisogno di parole che rischierebbero soltanto di danneggiarla. A seguire "Policy Of Truth" e introdotta dallo splendido outro della traccia precedente. Attenzione al cambio delle battute poco prima che la voce di Dave attacchi ed incanti in un’interpretazione con un crescendo formidabile. Si giunge così a "Blue Dress", in cui il privilegio di prestare la voce alle splendide liriche spetta allo stesso autore di esse.
Martin Lee Gore si concede ad uno dei suoi tipici brani dai toni alti, che spezzano la cupezza vocale di Gahan. E così meravigliosamente si scivola a quella che non vorremmo mai fosse l’ultima traccia: "Clean". Si tratta di un brano ambiguo che ci lascia straniati da un capolavoro che rappresenta il miglior tentativo da parte dei Depeche Mode di raccontare se stessi.
Le stelle sono naturalmente 5, ed è facile osservarle nella "notte tanto attesa".

Oggi molte band si ispirano ai DM rubacchiando qua e la, ma nessuno ha ancora raccolto la loro eredità, forse proprio perché non basta copiare la musica: è un fatto di anima e, in quella di Martin Gore c’era parecchia roba da tirar fuori.

Chi se ne sta sul divano a sentire un po di tv dopo una giornata lavorativa stancante viene catturata da un'atmosfera ballerina dei DM e si ritrova a ballare con le figlie.

I Depeche Mode possono essere credo unanimemente considerati i pioneri della musica elettronica in senso stretto.
Violator rappresenta un mattone importante del «Palazzo della Musica», un’opera coesa, compatta e ricca.
