"Master of the Moon" è l'ultimo album in studio della band di Ronnie James Dio, il folletto (così chiamato dai fan) è conosciuto soprattutto per aver militato in gruppi importanti come i Rainbow e i Black Sabbath. Forse quest'ultimo lavoro dei Dio non è uno degli album più apprezzati della loro discografia, molti si ricorderanno del loro primo disco "Holy Diver" dove è contenuta la famosissima "Rainbow in the Dark" o il celebre album "Dream Evil" che sforna pezzi degni di nota come "Night People" e l'ottima "I Could Have Been a Dreamer."
Con il passare degli anni, la musica dei Dio è diventata un pò più estrema, come ci dimostrano alcuni album tipo "Strange Highways e Angry Machines." Quest' ultimi due, hanno un sound che per certi versi sembrano ispirati da "Dehumanizer" dei Black Sabbath, infatti Ronnie James Dio vi fece un breve ritorno per pubblicare un nuovo album con i Black Sabbath, per poi fare di nuovo ritorno nei Dio.
Il decimo album per i Dio, "Master of the Moon", risulta un lavoro abbastanza diverso dai precedenti, insolito, suggestivo, oscuro e dalle ambientazioni molto cupe, l'artwork del disco potrebbe quasi descrivere l'essenza dell'intero album. Sicuramente meno Heavy e più aggressivo del precedente "Killing the Dragon", l'ultimo "Master of The Moon", convince proprio per le sue sonorità misteriose e notturne dai toni molti freddi, che colpiscono al primo ascolto. Tecnicamente nulla da dire, i Dio sono stati sempre all'altezza delle aspettative in ogni loro lavoro.
L'album si apre con il brano "One More for the Road" che non li lancia immediatamente nello spirito dell'album, forse una delle canzoni meno cupe dell'intero disco risulta essere davvero molto trascinante con una vena rock molto coinvolgente. Le atmosfere si accendono con il successivo brano "Master of the Moon" che dà anche il titolo all'album, molto bello il ritornello di questo brano. Il terzo brano è "The End of the World" che sembra un brano in vecchio stile rock. Seguono brani convincenti come "Shivers" e l'espressiva "The Man Who Would Be King" quest'ultima una delle mie preferite dell'album, e la suggestiva "The Eyes" dai toni molto accattivanti. I successivi brani come "Living the Lie" e "I Am" suonano come qualcosa di già sentito, forse in vecchio stile Dio, una piccola curiosità, quando ascoltate il ritornello di "I Am" non riuscite più a togliervelo dalla testa, ascoltare per credere. Il brano "Death by Love" invece, è stato scritto in parte, dall'ex bassista Chuck Garric, che ha collaborato con i Dio in "Magica" album molto interessante, per chi non lo avesse ascoltato. L'ultimo brano di questo dignitoso album è "In Dreams", mentre esisterebbe anche un altro brano dal titolo "The Prisoner Of Paradise" una (bonus track) inserita (nella special edition). Ospite nell'album il bassista Rudy Sarzo (ex Quiet Riot), per sostituire Jeff Pilson che non è riuscito a completare l'album per troppi impegni.
Alla fine "Master of the Moon" potrebbe risultare ai fan poco potente e un pò troppo leggero al primo ascolto, ma secondo il mio punto di vista, quest'album ricava i suoi punti di forza, proprio dalle ambientazioni dark e suggestive che rendono maestosi i brani, con un forte impatto emotivo. La voce di Ronnie James Dio come al solito non delude mai, e questo rappresenta una garanzia per tutti i suoi lavori compreso questo.

Un album che merita l'ascolto e che non può e non deve mancare nella collezione musicale di un metallaro.
Living The Lie, una canzone potentissima che ogni volta che la sento mi da carica, come se mi avessero fatto un'iniezione di adrenalina.
