La carriera di un musicista, nella stragrande maggioranza dei casi, si decide dalla qualità e dal successo del secondo album. Quanti solisti e gruppi sono diventati famosi grazie ad una canzone oppure ad un LP, durando un "battito di ciglia" perchè non sono riusciti a ripetersi? Tantissimi! Ma quanti hanno avuto la bravura di comporre, alla "prova dei fatti", un capolavro? Sì, RIO è un capolavoro! Ovviamente non ho la presunzione di sostenere questo; semplicemente mi baso sui giudizi di critici e artisti che sostengono questo. Cito uno su tutti, Sir Bob Gendolf (che tra l'altro tanto amico di Simon & C. non era per la storia del suicidio di Michael Hutchance degli Inxs... ma questa è un'altra storia e mi auguro che qualcuno di voi la conosca), bene - il baronetto di sua Maestà - cita letteralmente: "i Duran Duran sono un gruppo formato da ragazzi intelligenti e colti; con Rio hanno sfornato un fottutissimo e meraviglioso lavoro musicale, probabilmente il disco new have, synt pop, dance rock più bello degli anni '80". Come dargli torto?
A me i Duran Duran piacciono in maniera "anomala". Preferisco da sempre le loro canzoni meno famose e commerciali (She's Too Much - Someone Else Not Me - Shadow In Tour Side - American Science solo per citarne qualcuna - secondo me le conoscete in pochissimi) ma Rio fa eccezione. A dire il vero l'unico brano che non mi piace è Hungry Like The Wolf uno dei più ascoltati in assoluto. Lo trovo iperprodotto e piuttosto "banale" nei ritmi. Le ulteriori otto tracce sinceramente sono tutte delle perle. Anzi, non riesco a capire come Fly Like An Angel non abbia avuto lo spazio che meritava e sia stata relegata ad un bieco bside di My Own Way. Rio, New Religion, Lonely in Your Nightmare, Save a Prayer, Last Chance on the Stairway e The Choffeur sono suonate alla grande, composte con immensa creatività e arrangiate con dovizia nei particolari. Si sente che i cinque erano particolarmente ispirati e vogliosi di emergere. Anche la copertina è un'assoluta meraviglia grazie all'artista statunitense Patrick Nagel.
John Taylor nel suo libro/biografia sostiene che l'eagerato successo di pubblico e vendite che i Duran Duran ebbero dal 1982 al 1985 si è ritorto contro la band che, inondata da quella popolarità, si è "persa"; qualcuno (soprattutto lui stesso) ha trovato rifugio nell'alcol e nella droga e qualcun'altro ha tentato, senza riuscirci, carriere musicali parallele. Lo stesso virtuoso bassista (nominato in diverse classifiche di riviste specializzate tra i più talentuosi del mondo) dopo molta autocritica non a caso ha intitolato il capitolo dedicato a RIO... "Il Capolavoro".

Dall’estate del 1982 i Duran Duran hanno dovuto fare i conti con un ingombrante capolavoro di perfezione come “Rio”, vera croce e delizia per la band di Le Bon.
"Duran Duran" è sicuramente un album di qualità con molti spunti di interesse, forse per certi aspetti anche migliore di “Rio”.
