Una recensione seria sugli Eiffel 65? Ma si dai, perchè no, soprattutto dato che il loro disco migliore, nonchè il più adatto per parlarne "seriamente" non è ancora stato preso in considerazione da nessuno prima d'ora. I nostri eroi devono la loro fama e successo all'album d'esordio "Europop", che a posteriori risulta essere il loro episodio meno riuscito a livello di struttura e amalgama, ma l'effetto novità si rivela dirompente e per tutto il resto c'è "Blue" (dabudì dabudà), che l'esimio ed autorevolissimo magazine "Rolling Stone" ritiene essere la canzone più irritante di tutti i tempi (fosse stata proposta dalla Lady Madonna di turno non oso immaginare cosa ci avrebbero ricamato sopra questi squallidi prezzolati). In ogni caso, archiviata questa parentesi, Maury, Gabry e Jeffrey provano a dimostrare di poter essere qualcosa di più che una semplice meteora eurodance e ci riescono, anche se purtroppo non gli viene concessa la possibilità di poterlo dimostrare.
La prima causa del fiasco commerciale di "Contact!" è senza ombra di dubbio una promozione assolutamente inadeguata (praticamente solo due singoli estratti tra cui "Back In Time", non uno degli episodi migliori dell'album, oltre al dettaglio non trascurabile di una copertina decisamente anonima) che li porta a sparire completamente dalle classifiche internazionali in cui avevano fatto prepotentemente irruzione con "Europop"; un'iniezione di sfiducia da parte della Universal che tarpa le ali al trio piemontese, costringendolo di fatto a rinunciare ad ogni legittima ambizione di consolidamento in ambito internazionale. Un album come "Contact!" non meritava questo trattamento e questo spreco di potenziale ma ormai il danno è stato fatto, è cosa nota e risaputa che nell'industria discografica esistono figli e figliastri, questo non è sicuramente il primo caso e purtroppo nemmeno l'ultimo, quindi è inutile soffermarsi ulteriormente su questo aspetto. "Contact!" rimane inconfondibilmente un disco degli Eiffel 65, quindi punta al sodo senza troppi fronzoli: ritmo, entusiasmo ed energia, ma d'altro canto la proposta musicale è molto più variegata e completa rispetto all'esordio, non più solo eurodance ma anche incursioni in altri ambiti pop ed in generale un sound più maturo, che lo rende un album di respiro internazionale a tuttotondo e con piena dignità.
La carne al fuoco è decisamente tanta, ben diciassette canzoni in tracklist, una quantità che nella maggior parte dei casi finisce per risultare deleteria, ma in fin dei conti l'unico vero passo falso è l'insulso mash-up con Battiato di "80's Stars", estratto come singolo in Italia (altro errore strategico madornale), per il resto l'offerta è ampia e di livello; si ho detto proprio di livello, qualcosa da ridire? La prima cosa che salta all'orecchio è l'energia, l'entusiasmo e la carica positiva di due anthems a presa istantanea come "Lucky (In My Life)" e "One Goal", in particolare quest'ultima che se fossi un discografico avrei usato come singolo di lancio senza lesinare risorse per una promozione su scala internazionale, ma a parte questo "Contact!" ha molte altre frecce nel proprio arco. Ad esempio il synth-pop fresco, semplice e dinamico di episodi come "Morning Time", la bella "Jonny Grey" e la trascinante "Journey" in conclusione, la verve electro-funky di "New Life" e "Crazy" oppure l'intrigante fantasia "spaziale" di "I Don't Wanna Lose". Personalmente le mie preferite sono il midetempo elettro-orchestrale "King Of Lullaby" con il suo incedere maestoso e visionario (perfetta come secondo singolo, preferibilmente accompagnata da un videoclip ad alto tasso creativo) e "Brightly Shines", forse la canzone più "raffinata" degli E65, uso sapiente ed azzeccatissimo degli effetti vocali, refrain epico ed intenso, ottima base ritmica elettronica ed un bel bridge strumentale.
Non mancano ovviamente episodi più strettamente discotecari ed in linea con il primo album, tra cui spicca soprattutto la divertente e ben riuscita "People Of Tomorrow" (altro potenziale singolo non sfruttato) oltre alle varie "Losing You", "I DJ With The Fire", "Faraway" e "Back In Time", che completano senza sbavature l'album della maturità di questi tre ragazzi che, seppur lungi dall'essere gli ABBA di casa nostra, sapevano il fatto loro e soprattutto sapevano benissimo che erano (e purtroppo per loro è stata anche questa la loro rovina). Mi chiedo se un giorno i discografici e la stampa italiota si renderanno conto di cosa si erano (loro malgrado) trovati tra le mani ed hanno gettato al vento trattando gli E65 come cani rognosi: quando mai un disco italiano ricapiterà al quarto posto della hit parade americana? (nonchè al quinto in quella canadese, quarto in Nuova Zelanda ed un onorevole dodicesimo in UK) Insieme agli Eiffel 65 abbiamo perso l'occasione di proporci come esportatori di musica "giovane" e dinamica oltre che di pattume nato morto in mercati di terza fascia. Ma evidentemente a lor signori non importa, meglio ricoprire di leccate le Amy Winehouse e le Adele di turno, da bravi vassalli quali siamo. Va beh, per fortuna mi rimangono le loro canzoni, fedeli compagne in momenti di svago e leggerezza; ho già fin troppi motivi per deprimermi ed incazzarmi, dovrei cercarne altri nella musica?
