"Exilia".
Questo il nome di una cartella che ho trovato una sera di qualche tempo fa, frugando negli anfratti del mio computer. Chissà, forse il frutto di qualche scambio di files. Dentro, una sola canzone: "Stop Playing God". Non me la ricordo, l'avrò mai ascoltata?
Bella però, mi piace. Ma da che album proviene? E chi sono questi Exilia?
Inizio la mia ricerca, scoprendo inaspettatamente che sono italiani, ma quasi completamente ignorati in patria: per farsi notare sono dovuti emigrare all'estero. Adottati a tutti gli effetti dalla Germania, esordiscono nel 2000 con l'album "Rightside Up" e, nel 2004, vengono scelti come supporters ufficiali nella tournèe europea dei Rammstein. Nello stesso anno sfornano, grazie alla tedesca Gun Supersonic Records, il secondo dei quattro album attualmente all'attivo, "Unleashed", semisconosciuto in Italia, ma un vero e proprio "must" in terra teutonica.
Sempre più incuriosita, decido di procurarmi qualche loro opera e, non senza fatica (abito a Verbania, qui procacciarsi materiale originale su gruppi poco noti è un vero casino, persino per "Sandinista!" dei Clash ho dovuto passare un calvario...), riesco a trovare proprio "Unleashed".
E si rivela una bella sorpresa.
Una miscela esplosiva di sonorità aggressive, dinamiche e sfrontate, coronate dalla voce roca e potente dell'instancabile front-woman del gruppo, Masha (una bionda con i dreadlocks e l'aria di sapere il fatto suo): questo è "Unleashed", un disco d'ascoltare tutto d'un fiato, in cui la tensione non cala mai.
Bellissima soprattutto la prima parte dell'album, decisa, diretta ed efficace: spiccano l'opener "Coincidence", subito seguita da "Stop Playing God" e "Day In Hell", ma anche l'intensa "Underdog", la più pacata "Mr. Man" e l'intrigante "Starseed", tutti brani caratterizzati da riff di chitarra incisivi, ritornelli accattivanti e che non disdegnano qualche punta di "gothic".
Non mancano inoltre i momenti più tranquilli e moderati, come in "Without You" e nella sopracitata "Mr. Man", ma tra i "lenti" colpisce soprattutto "I Guess You Know", dove gli Exilia si avvalgono della collaborazione vocale di Micha, leader di un'altra band tedesca, gli In Extremo.
Insomma, "Unleashed" è un lavoretto bello pieno, accattivante e coinvolgente, opera seconda di una band con un grandissimo potenziale, assolutamente da tenere d'occhio.
Una scarica elettrica che dura 49 minuti. Da ascoltare.
