La storia dei Fleetwood Mac è fatta di due periodi fondamentali, diversissimi tra loro, che hanno marchiato a fuoco la musica britannica e poi americana tra anni 60 e 70. In questa recensione mi occuperò del periodo che preferisco, ossia il primo, quello con Peter Green e Jeremy Spencer alla guida artistica del gruppo. Green aveva suonato in Hard Road di John Mayall e aveva subito dopo deciso di formare un quartetto con il batterista Mick Fleetwood e il fido bassista di Mayall, John McVie (dai cui il nome della band) e con il virtuoso della slide Spencer, un fan di Elmore James. I primi album della band erano caratterizzati da un forte rigore stilistico nei confronti del blues urbano, quasi una ricerca filologica, ma già in "English Rose" la strumentale "Albatross" e "Black Magic Woman" (che fu resa celebre anche sa Santana), avevano fatto intuire che Peter Green poteva andare oltre il blues.
Il disco che prendo in esame, che considero il grande capolavoro dei primi Fleetwood Mac, è "Then Play On" del 1970. Inanzitutto è da segnalare l'aggiunta del terzo chitarrista, Danny Kirwan, che da il suo supporto creativo anche in composizione e la leadrship in fase compositiva di Green. E importante è anche il cambio di etichetta, dalla Blue Horizon di Mike Vernon, uno dei grandi fautori del British Blues alla Reprise.
I picchi creativi e più interessanti del disco sono sicuramente la sperimentale "Oh Well" con il suo esordio blueseggiante ma che ben presto si trasforma in una composizione da nove minuti di intensa chitarra acustica che esplora territori oltre il blues e oltre il rock in un crescendo strumentale a cui si aggiunge il pianoforte di Christine Perfect, moglie di McVie e futura componente della band. Per non parlare della nervosa e energica "Rattlesnake Shake" o di "Showbiz Blues" con la sola slide e la voce di Green. Il nuovo biondo chitarrista Kirwan compone l'ottima opener "Coming Your way" con le percussioni in grande evidenza, e la sinuosa "altought the sun is shining". In grande evidenza le strumentali "My Dream" con il suo andamento sinuoso" e la rockeggiante "Searching For Madge" composta da Mick Fleetwood, con una chitarra solista di Green in grande spolvero.
Dopo questo disco Peter Green lascerà per una crisi mistica che si trascinerà per molti anni e qualche tempo dopo verrà seguito da Spencer che si unirà a una setta chiamata Children of god e i Fleetwood Mac cambieranno rotta, introducendo la moglie di Fleetwood, Stevie Nicks come cantante e Christine Perfect come tastierista e sfonderanno nel rock pop in america, ma qui non ci è dato parlarne. In definitiva un album fondamentale per il movimento british blues ma non solo, viste le ottime sperimentazioni per cercare una via oltre la fedele trasposizione dei classici blues.
