Nati intorno alla metà degli anni Settanta, in quella New York, fucina di innumerevoli talenti e tra i crocevia "obbligati" per chi voleva affermarsi nel rock-system, i Foreigner furono tra i principali protagonisti di quel fermento artistico nell'effervescente panorama pre-ottantiano - da molti considerato irripetibile - da cui ebbe origine l'egemonia culturale e commerciale che porterà il rock (a parte la breve parentesi punk) alla definitiva consacrazione e alle attenzioni del grande pubblico nel decennio successivo, raccogliendo consensi plebiscitari in termini di popolarità e vendite. Dopo tre album che ebbero significativi riconoscimenti commerciali nelle chart di Billboard, la band "esordì" negli anni '80 con quello che da molti è considerato il loro capolavoro. Uno dei momenti più significativi nel codificare un genere come l'Aor, allora in netta ascesa.
Uscito in contemporanea con un altro pezzo da novanta che risponde al nome di "Escape" dei pari grado Journey, ed esattamente un anno prima di "IV" dei Toto ed "Eyes of the tiger" dei Survivor (gli altri tre gruppi che idealmente formano lo strepitoso poker d'assi che ha scolpito indelebilmente le tavole della legge del hard melodico), questo full-length intitolato semplicemente "4" (banalmente perchè fu appunto il quarto disco e il gruppo al tempo si presentava come un quartetto), rimane in bilico tra momenti di espressività dichiaratamente di matrice rock e incursioni synth-pop, con l'obiettivo di non discostarsi mai troppo da finalità palesemente incentrate sulla melodia. E' facile immaginare, ascoltando i 45 minuti scarsi di questo album, i motivi che lo condussero, senza grandi sforzi, ad insiedarsi al #1 negli States, conquistando i favori dell'audience americana (fino a divenire il sesto disco di platino) ed ottenendo buoni risultati anche in Europa e Regno Unito (una lusinghiera quarta posizione).
Prodotto dal mastermind Mike Jones e dal Re Mida Robert John "Mutt" Lange, fresco reduce dal successo planetario di "Back in Black" degli AC/DC (e compagno d'avventura dei futuri successi "platinati" dei Def Leppard, tra gli altri), l' album è un puro concentrato di hit-single dal sapore prettamente radiofonico, incentrato su gioiosi e ariosi ritornelli il cui risultato è un rock d' impatto e di facile assimilazione, che se da una parte anticipa timidamente gli stilemi di sonorità che saranno protagoniste degli Eightes, dall'altra mantiene tuttavia una stretta relazione con un sound tipicamente "Seventies", più spontaneo meno "calcolato". Inevitabile poi, non menzionare la spinta propulsiva fornita della voce di Lou Grammatico (per tutti più brevemente "Gramm"), vero valore aggiunto, in grado di cesellare con la sua voce ritmi più sostenuti e sincopati (come nell'opener "Night Life") e momenti di grande pathos con vertiginose incursioni, capaci di divergere da protocolli tipicamente "rock", per approdare a timbriche dal sapore rhythm and blues (e spesso dichiaratamente di derivazione soul/gospel - James Brown docet), dimostrando una versatilità che di fatto lo impongono, per chi scrive, tra i più grandi interpreti del genere. "Juke Boxe Hero" uno dei brani rimasto impresso nell'immaginario colletitvo dei fan, è una delle più lampanti testimonianze. L'esecuzione "sgraziata" quanto sferzante e meditata, rappresenta una sorta di volontà della band di cercare ampi consensi nel mainstream radiofonico. Oppure l'aggressiva "Break it up", pezzo incalzante che porta lo stesso Gramm a cantare "al limite" su registri molto alti e di gran fattura tecnica.
"Waiting for a girl like you" inaugura il momento romantico e sdolcinato del disco. Una delle più famose song del gruppo, il marchio di fabbrica con cui milioni di fan identificano la band insieme al pezzo che li vedrà, tre anni più tardi, spopolare nelle classifiche di tutto il mondo, la celebre "I Wanna Know What Love Is". "Luanne" ci propone il momento più "easy", scanzonato e brioso del disco. Forse un pò banalotta ma non per questo meno piacevole, anticipa uno dei masterpiece del disco (e dell'intera discografia, oserei dire) nonché una tra le song più celebri della decade: "Urgent".
Tralasciando la solita prestazione magistrale e questa volta decisamente atipica di Gramm, è un brano con ritmi di chiara estrazione funk, sapientemente mescolati ad elementi electro/pop, che riesce nell' obiettivo di stupire e stravolgere quasi ogni regola, anticipando esperimenti che molte band avranno il coraggio di riproporre solo molti anni dopo.
Un assolo di sassofono fà gridare al miracolo e trascina una canzone che si rivelò un autentico hit-single, facendo letteralmente "saltare il banco" nelle scalette radiofoniche degli States dei primissimi anni ‘80.
E' il momento di "I'm Gonna Win" chitarristicamente più solida nelle ritmiche, quasi solenne nel suo incedere maestoso ed enfatica nel ritornello, esattamente come la guitar-oriented "Woman in Black", grintosa e appassionata, introdotta da un magistrale assolo di chitarra e da un ritmo nuovamente e inaspettatamente debitore alla tradizione soul/gospel.
Con l'intimista "Girl Of The Moon" si ritorna su una dimensione nuovamente romantica. Sfarzosa nella fisionomia, leggermente malinconica quanto gradevole e seducente, anticipa la gioviale "Don't Let Go", ennesima perla che in maniera brillante chiude questo capolavoro. Nuovamente su territori graffianti e con delle backing-vocals emotivamente molto riuscite e coinvolgenti, costituisce l'apoteosi di un disco che, insieme a pochi altri, ha contribuito a creare uno standard e un riferimento per decine di gruppi che calcheranno le scene negli anni a venire nel circus dell' Aor e più in generale dell' hard rock melodico.
