Dopo essere stati allontanati dai King Crimson, il polistrumentista Ian McDonald ed il batterista Michael Giles decisero di mettersi in proprio e realizzare un loro personale gruppo.
La band avrebbe dovuto chiamarsi Foreigner.
Registrato il primo album nel 1971 (con l'aiuto di personaggi del calibro di Peter Sinfield e Steve Winwood), lo pubblicarono, invece, sotto il semplice nome di McDonald & Giles. Si tratta di un prodotto decisamente gradevole, che miscela sapientemente morbido Prog Rock à-la I Talk To The Wind, con elementi di Pop dell'epoca.
Si devono, però, attendere altri sei anni (e l'abbandono di Giles) per veder apparire il marchio Foreigner su di un disco. Il primo album, omonimo, riduce notevolmente la carica progressive rispetto a ''McDonald & Giles'', in favore di un approccio più immediato.
Infatti l'unico pezzo che preserva l'impostazione prog è la meravigliosa Starrider, probabilmente il loro capolavoro assoluto. . . il resto invece oscilla tra il Pop ed un Hard Rock piuttosto leggero, dando al tutto un particolare sound che ispirerà molti gruppi AOR del decennio seguente.
Già nei successivi ''Double Vision'' ed ''Head Games'', di Art-Rock rimane solo il nome di McDonald stampato sul retro di copertina.
Il 1980 è l'anno della svolta per il gruppo: l'ex membro dei King Crimson presenta delle bozze per il successivo lavoro, che avrebbe dovuto intitolarsi ''Silent Partners''.
Giudicato troppo anacronistico, viene presto scartato. Ciò decreta il licenziamento di McDonald, che dopo essere stato estromesso dai King Crimson, ora si trova pure escluso da quel progetto che lui stesso aveva creato. Con lui se ne va pure il buon tastierista Al Greenwood.
Dopo un breve periodo di assestamento, nel luglio del 1981, esce nei negozi la nuova opera, intitolata ''4'' (titolo semplice ed essenziale che, prima di tutto, ci ricorda di essere in presenza della quarta pubblicazione. Inoltre si mette in evidenza il fatto che, ormai, i Foreigner sono passati da sestetto a quartetto).
''Foreigner 4'', pur essendo un album smaccatamente commerciale ed un calderone di hit da classifica, rappresenta, assieme all'album d'esordio, il vertice della loro carriera.
La prima traccia che incontriamo è l'ottima Night Life, pezzo molto ritmato nonché inno alla vita notturna.
Segue la magnifica hit Juke Box Hero, miscuglio perfetto tra atmosfere ossessive ed elementi sia Pop che Hard Rock. Il brano, oltre a mettere a dura prova l'ugola d'oro di Lou Gramm, evidenzia in modo diretto e palese gli intenti della band:

Someday he's gonna make it to the top
And be a juke box hero, got stars in his eyes

Dopo la gradevole, ma poco significativa Break It Up, ecco arrivare l'altro cavallo di battaglia Waiting For A Girl Like You. Il brano, inserito anche nell'immensa colonna sonora del videogioco GTA Vice City, si presenta come il giusto punto d'incontro tra le ballate tradizionali e le tentazioni danzerecce da discoteca... cinque minuti scarsi che si ascoltano con immenso piacere e che, nonostante la forte connotazione romantica, non risultano mai stucchevoli.
La leggerissima ed orecchiabile Luanne si presenta come un altro momento di lieve stanchezza compositiva.
Nettamente meglio farà la successiva Urgent, magistrale composizione Funky-Pop (nella quale si può ascoltare un ottimo assolo di sassofono) che all'epoca imperversò in tutte le stazioni radio FM.
Si procede su ottimi livelli con I'm Gonna Win, inserita anche come B-Side del 45 giri Waiting For A Girl Like You. Un giro di chitarra parecchio tagliente, leggere tastiere sullo sfondo ed una delle migliori performace vocali di Gramm, conferiscono al tutto un tono quasi epico. Esattamente nello stesso stile si presenta anche la successiva Woman In Black.
La penultima traccia, Girl On The Moon (B-Side di Urgent), ricalca con minor ispirazione i ritmi e le sonorità della più volte citata Waiting For A Girl Like You... mentre la chiusura è invece affidata a Don't Let Go, molto carina per essere del semplice Pop.
In conclusione, come voto, darei un 7, 5/10 per quest'album semplice ed orecchiabile che, nonostante qualche leggera caduta di stile, presenta numerosi punti di forza.
In fin dei conti, come qui si può ben notare, ''semplicità'' non è sempre sinonimo di ''banalità''...
