Strana realtà questi "Frog Eyes": 4 elementi chitarra-basso-batteria-tastiere, con all'attivo 3 album e diversi EP, collaborazioni con Destroyer, Wolf Parade ed altri esponenti della scena indie canadese.
Il loro tratto distintivo risiede nella particolarità della voce del frontman Carey Mercer, che è sostanzialmente quella di David Bowie che imita David Sylvian, ma che subito dopo lascia spazio ad un esagitato predicatore di strada da cabaret un po' in acido. Anche il suo modo di utilizzarla, questa benedetta voce, è fuori dagli schemi usuali: nevrotica, declamatoria, con repentine incursioni nel falsetto, eppur calda, mai psicotica, mai fastidiosamente querula come certa musica indie "di maniera" ci ha abituati a sentire (ogni riferimento a chi sta battendo le mani e dicendo "yeah!" è puramente casuale).
Costruita sull'uso di parti di chitarra aperte da melodie di pianoforte, batteria "estemporanea" e una certa linearità del movimento che riesce ad incastrarsi perfettamente con la totale obliquità del cantato, la musica riesce a restare sempre intensa ed a catturare l'attenzione dell'ascoltatore, lanciandolo in un mondo "altro" in cui lasciarsi andare. Questa non è musica che punta all'entertainment, non nel modo in cui siamo abituati, ma si insinua nella coscienza già dal primo ascolto nonostante sia d'acchito ostica. Indubbiamente l'approccio con questo disco ammette poche distrazioni, in quanto l'insieme è tutto tranne che musica di sottofondo. Difficile districarsi tra i criptici testi che richiamano un immaginario fantastico fatto di fuga e di spaesamento, spesso declamati in un flusso di coscienza parossistico.
Questo disco è uscito nel 2003, ma è stato poi rieditato nel 2006, arricchito di materiale: una veloce mappa d'ascolto per poter inquadrare il lavoro comprende l'iniziale "One In Six Children Will Flee In Boat", "Time Destroys Its Plan At The Reactionary Table", "Miasma Gardens", "A Latex Ice Age".
