Mi ricordo che nel 1993 sul podio della classifica degli album in Inghilterra vi erano due graziose donzelle: una era Björk col colossale "Debut" (3° posto) l'altra era tale Louise Gabrielle Bobb (find your way 1° posto). Senza voler paragonare in alcun modo i due personaggi, tra l'altro lontanissimi per stile e territorio musicale, ammetto che ho seguito con lo stesso interesse e con crescente ammirazione le carriere di entrambe. Tuttavia, giacché gli scritti su Björk qui, giustamente, abbondano vorrei spendere qualche parola su questa artista dal carattere piuttosto defilato che però nel suo piccolo ha saputo regalare alcune belle canzoni. Canzoni che credo lasceranno un segno nel panorama del disimpegnato pop europeo.
Quando Gabrielle pubblica "Rise", corre già l'anno 1999, due album alle spalle, una manciata di buoni singoli da chart come "Dreams", "I Wish", "Forget about the World", "give me a little more time" ed una strepitosa versione di "Walk on by" di Bucharach. Certo il grande botto non c'era ancora stato ma per chi avesse avuto un po' di lungimiranza non era difficile intuire che la ragazza aveva una personalità ed una non comune capacità di scrivere buone canzoni. Il terzo album, pur non volendo assurgere a fantomatica prova del nove segnava una svolta e definiva il sound di una ragazza che faceva ancora fatica e fondere il pop più scanzonato ed un certo soul pregiato di fattura anglosassone. Aiutata così da co-autori/produttori ora di gran fama quali Jonathan Shorten/Richard Stannard (Joss Stone/Artful dodgers) Gabrielle metteva in campo una squadra di brani veramente affiatati dove sono almeno 5 le punte.
L'iniziale "Sunshine" lo confesso, è una canzone che ancora oggi, da sentimentalone quale sono, è capace di farmi emozionare. La successiva "Rise" sfrutta un campionamento (autorizzato) di "Knockin on heaven's door" di Dylan regalando a Gabrielle il successo anche oltreoceano. Pezzo di grande impatto commerciale anche se non lo ritengo il migliore fra gli undici. Altalenando ritmi mid- e uptempo ("When a woman" su tutte) il disco raggiunge i punti più alti nelle delicate ballad "should i Stay" e soprattutto "Over you", stupendo l'ascoltatore nell'ottima fusione fra parole (mai a caso) e armonia.
In conclusione: più di due milioni di copie vendute, con dignità e senza alcuna tracotanza. Gabrielle continua ancora oggi a scrivere nello stesso modo disseminando qua e là importanti gemme di pop elegante ("Out of reach" nella colonna sonora di Bridget Jones ed il bellissimo "Play to win" del 2004) e rimanendo esempio di stile, eleganza e coerenza.
Io le voglio ancora molto bene.
p.s il voto in realtà sarebbe un 3,5 ma non lo abbasso proprio per altri hit non menzionati (ehi 10 singoli in top ten.. mica bruscolini!)
