Dimenticatevi per un po'di Peter Gabriel, dimenticatevi di "The Musical Box", degli anni '70 dei travestimenti, della folta chioma con annessa barba di Phil Collins, ma scordatevi anche la tetra mano arancione che minacciosa si stampa sulla cover di "Invisible Touch", di MTV e del pop sintetico; una volta fatto questo potete immergervi in questo live.
Secondo molti critici e fans i Genesis hanno raggiunto la perfezione live tra il 1980 e il 1982, proponendosi come una live band fantastica, con una carica incredibile e un suono di una potenza fenomenale. Bene è vero, sentendo il materiale racchiuso in questo disco c'è la senzazione di trovarsi al cospetto di un gruppo pienamente conscio delle proprie potenzialità, inoltre il repertorio scelto per le esibizioni privilegia di molto i brani più rock e sacrifica i brani di atmosfera, ma anche le semplici canzoni pop sono dimenticate, rimangono solo "Follow Me Follow You" e "Misunderstanding", peraltro esempi di pop di classe.
Ascoltando "Three Sides Live" si riescono ad apprezzare i brani migliori di "Duke" e "Abacab", anche se vengono sacrificati ingiustamente la suite finale di "Duke" e i brani tratti dagli ultimi lavori, "Dance On A Volcano" per esempio che avrebbero reso molto interessante il disco; va detto che la scaletta riportata quindi è una pura semplice selezione dei brani eseguti durante il tour del 1982 e non ne riproduce fedelmente lo spettacolo. L'inizio allora è affidato a "Turn It On Again", canzone che trae una nuova linfa dall'esecuzione con Thompson e Stuermer, diventa così un pezzo diverso, perde la sua facilità e coinvolge l'ascoltatore, è la prima scarica di adrenalina; segue poi "Dodo" da "Abacab", brano con profonde caratteristiche prog che mutano come sull'lp verso una forma rock granitica, Collins canta in modo perfetto e Tony Banks regge con i ferri del mestiere in modo impeccabile la possente melodia per poi divertirsi con i suoni sintetici più disparati per l'intermezzo "Lurker". "Dodo" poi sfocia in "Abacab", il basso suonato da Stuermer risuona regolare e minaccioso, Mike sembra torturare la sua chitarra che emette quelle poche note che aprono alla voce di Phil, che si lancia in questo fenomenale brano, se in studio sono molto accentuati i toni disco dal vivo invece la canzone assume ben altri colori, un puro rock con una straordinaria coda finale percussiva, suonata da Colllins e Thompson in sincro, che mette i brividi.
Da "Duke" viene eseguita la suite di apertura mentre dal lp del 1981 ecco la bellezza semplice e efficace di "Me And Sarah Jane", chiude il primo cd "Follow You Follow Me". Il secondo presenta il meglio, esecuzioni incredibili e trascinati di "In The Cage", con in mezzo il medley tra "The Colony Of Slipper Men" e "The Cinema Show", e soprattutto della poetica "One For The Wine", dolce incanto di dieci minuti firmato Banks, questo brano, come "The Fountain Of Salmacis" e "It/Watcher Of The Skies" sono relativi alla versione originale inglese del doppio che presentava infatti quattro facciate live, l'edizione in cd infatti è proprio questa, cade di conseguenza il titolo dell'album.
Spariscono allora "Paperlate", "You Might Recall", "Me And Virgil", assenze mai rimpiante, discorso a parte per "Open Door" e "Evidence Of Autumn", due belle canzone risalenti alle sessions di "Duke". In conclusione un ottimo live, ripeto è il miglior modo per ascoltare i brani tratti da "Abacab" e apprezzarli, visto che i tre hanno escluso fortunatamente "Keep It Dark" e "Who Dunnit?" dal missaggio finale.

La versione live di "Turn It On Again" è migliore della versione in studio, specialmente verso la fine.
Three Sides Live dimostra come il gruppo sia in grado di reggere ancora qualsiasi live e che la creatività, perlomeno in sede concertistica, non sia andata a farsi fottere.
