"Old Dan's Records", uhm... non è semplice parlare di questo disco, è facile trarre conclusioni spicce ed errate, va ascoltato una, due, cento volte prima di comprenderne la reale dimensione; inizialmente lo etichettai come una zona d'ombra in mezzo ad un tripudio di luci sfavillanti; è effettivamente un album di qualità inferiore ai suoi predecessori ed ai suoi successori ma non è l'anello debole della catena, semplicemente un dignitoso album di passaggio, tutt'altro che privo di valore; richiede impegno e pazienza ed è per questo sconsigliabile ad ascoltatori frettolosi e distratti.
La più grossa lacuna di questo album è sicuramente la personalità, il carisma: il confronto con l'eclettico e poliedrico "Summer Side Of Life" è impietoso, "If You Could Read My Mind" e "Don Quixote" lo sovrastano in freschezza ed ispirazione; "Old Dan's Records" ha un sound opaco, quasi polveroso e dimesso, ad un primo ascolto sono solo due le canzoni che riescono a colpire l'ascoltatore: l'abituale e sempre divertente up-tempo country/folk senza troppe pretese "You Are What I Am" e l'elegantissima piano-ballad orchestrale "That Same Old Obsession", che richiama vagamente lo stile del precedente album "Don Quixote", senza dubbio la canzone migliore del lotto.
Per il resto "Old Dan's Records" propone un folk prevalentemente acustico abbastanza quadrato, senza sorprese e non eccelso in quanto a creatività, anche se pregevole e ben suonato: dopo qualche ascolto si possono apprezzare appieno a pieno l'allegra "It's Worth Believing" e la tenera e delicata ballad "Mother Of A Miner's Child"; tolte queste canzoni rimane una manciata di discreti episodi minori; la vivace titletrack si fa ascoltare ma sa decisamente di già sentito e poco originale, così come "Hi'way Songs", che potrebbe tranquillamente essere un outtake di "The Way I Feel" o "Back Here On Earth", le rimanenti "Farewell To Annabel", "Can't Depend On Love", "Lazy Mornin" e "My Pony Won't Go" sviluppano un sound sfumato e blueasy che sarà messo a fuoco in maniera più ispirata e convincente nel successivo album "Sundown".
Tra le sette meraviglie di Gordon Lightfoot del periodo 1970-1976 "Old Dan's Records", il quarto album che sta esattamente a metà del ciclo è sicuramente il meno riuscito: è una specie di "Sundown" allo stato embrionale, dopo tre lavori del calibro di "If You Could Read My Mind", "Summer Side Of Life" e "Don Quixote" dopotutto un calo di ispirazione è più che legittimo, e in ogni caso questo e tutt'altro che un brutto album: se ascoltato senza fretta ed una volta ogni tanto risulta nel complesso piacevole ed equilibrato. Sufficienza piena, con una nota di merito per "That Same Old Obsession" e "Mother Of A Miner's Child".
