E' sempre bello conoscere come nasce una leggenda. E se la leggenda in questione sono nientemeno che gli oscuri e mitici, semidimenticati Hellhammer, allora il piacere della riscoperta non può che essere doppio!
Passata alla storia per essere stati il primo gruppo del pioniere del Metal estremo Thomas Gabriel Warrior, dalle cui ceneri sarebbero poi nati i Celtic Frost, la formazione svizzera, che si mantenne in piedi per un periodo di tempo relativamente breve, dal 1982 al 1984, attraverso numerosi cambi di line-up, diede alla luce nel 1983 tre demo assolutamente terremotanti: "Death Fiend", "Triumph Of Death" e "Satanic Rites", portatori di una proposta musicale innovativa e sconvolgente per l'epoca, che andava oltre il nascente Thrash Metal per gettare le basi, grazie al suo muro sonoro compatto e devastante, derivato dall'ulteriore indurimento di quello dei Venom, al sound marcio e distorto, frutto di un'attitudine alla sperimentazione che si sarebbe poi trasmessa ai futuri Celtic Frost, e a testi pervasi da chiari riferimenti al mondo dell'occultismo e del satanismo, di quello che di lì a pochi anni sarebbe stato il Black Metal. In questo senso la band svizzera si pose come una delle più importanti formazioni underground del panorama Metal ottantiano, ancorché lontana dalla fama che avrebbero poi raggiunto altri gruppi, la cui novità seppe agire sotterraneamente come una delle influenze più determinanti per la nascita della scena Black Metal norvegese: in effetti la sua importanza è evidenziata anche dal fatto che molti esponenti di tale scena scelsero per sé soprannomi derivati dalle loro canzoni (basti citare Maniac, primo cantante dei Mayhem, il chitarrista Euronymus, dalla distorsione del titolo del pezzo "Eurynomos", o ancora, ovviamente, il batterista Hellhammer).
Sarebbe stato un vero peccato che il contributo della band elvetica allo sviluppo della corrente più estrema del Metal si perdesse e cadesse nel dimenticatoio, così il nostro Thomas Gabriel Warrior, con la collaborazione della Prowlin' Death Records, decise di ripubblicare tutti e tre i demo incisi dagli Hellhammer ormai 25 anni fa in una degna raccolta, questo "Demon Entrails", appunto. Tale raccolta è stata pubblicata nel febbraio di quest'anno in tre distinte edizioni: una in triplo vinile (un LP per ogni demo), una in doppio CD deluxe (io c'ho questa, tiè!! Hahaha!!) e un'altra in doppio CD semplice.
Il primo CD contiene il leggendario demo "Satanic Rites", in cui è possibile ascoltare brani assolutamente devastanti come "Messiah", "Third Of The Storm", "Maniac", la terribile "Eurynomos" o la stessa title track, o ancora pezzi vagamente Doom come la bellissima "Buried And Forgotten" (che sarà ripresa poi nel 1985 dai Celtic Frost col titolo "Necromantical Screams" nel disco "To Mega Therion") o "Triumph Of Death". Il secondo CD comprende invece tutte le tracce delle incisioni degli altri due demo "Death Fiend" e "Triumph Of Death": qui la qualità del suono è molto inferiore (del resto cosa pretendere da registrazioni semiartigianali di 25 anni fa?), in particolare il basso tende a sovrastare troppo la chitarra, tuttavia la forza di brani come "(Execution) When Hell's Near", "Blood Insanity", "Power Of Satan", "Metallic Storm" o "Hammerhead" non può non lasciare il segno nell'ascoltatore.
"Demon Entrails" è un pezzo di storia per appassionati, una raccolta che chiunque ama questa musica deve avere! Fatevi contagiare dall'energia incontenibile di una band che come poche altre (cito i Bathory) ha saputo influenzare, seppur solo a livello sotterraneo, i futuri sviluppi di quella che sarebbe stata la frangia più estrema del Metal. "Demon Entrails" rende finalmente giustizia a questo mito.
