Dopo lo spiazzante esordio con quella bomba di album qual'è "Walls Of Jericho", gli Helloween cercano subito l'anno dopo di sfondare con la prima saga del custode delle sette chiavi, ossia (come avrete capito) "Keeper Of The Seven Keys part I".
Poche sarebbero le persone che ascoltando i due album direbbero con sicurezza che siano della stessa band, difatti anche se sono trascorse solo 4 stagioni ne è passata di acqua dai ponti, cominciando dalla voce. Infatti ad occuparsi delle parti vocali non è più il chitarrista-anima della band Kai Hansen, ma (udite ed udite) il mitico Michael Kiske, che non mi vergognerei a considerare come uno dei migliori cantanti in ambito metal, e la differenza comincia già a sentirsi, sia per la voce che per le canzoni, infatti il mio amico (anche meno!) Kiske dà un contributo pazzesco nel songwriting, difatti passiamo da canzoni sparate e dirette con una voce ruvida come la carta vetrata a songs decisamente più melodiche, gioiose e ragionate, contornate da una voce a dir poco esaltante, anche se devo ammettere che la potenza è rimasta di casa!
Dopo questa breve introduzione passiamo all'analisi delle tracce del disco, che dopo la classica intro da' spazio alla bellissima "I'm Alive, che potremmo anche prendere come classica canzone della band tedesca. Qui troviamo potenza e melodia unite assieme perfettamente con un assolo stupendo che infonde un'energia tale da permettere a un bambino di alzare il monte Everest! Dopo le melodie spensierate di "A Little Time" arriva il momento di ascoltare la grandissima "Twilight Of The Gods" che comincia con i soliti riff happy che hanno reso famosi gli Helloween, per poi abbandonarsi a cavalcate maideniane e assoli da paura, per dare vita ad una delle canzoni più fighe del combo.
Arriva ora per i nostri vecchi il periodo di sperimentare, e ci provano con la ballad "A Tale That Wasn't Right" e devo ammettere che però non riesce molto bene, infatti si presenta a mio avviso come il punto debole dell'album. Ma non c'e neanche il tempo di pensarci che arriva prepotente "Future World", indubbiamente il miglior pezzo del disco dove troviamo un super Kiske che dimostra una maturità impressionante nonostante la giovanissima età e un Grosskopf che con il suo quattro corde ci regala dei giri a dir poco estasianti...
Ma non è finita qui, perche a concludere il disco in bellezza ci pensa un'altra colonna portante della band di Amburgo: stiamo parlando di Halloween, che si erige in tutti i suoi 13 minuti mostrandosi sempre interessante e mai noiosa con quel ritornello trascinante e i numerosi assoli, lasciandoci all'Outro "Follow The Sign", che chiude definitivamente la prima parte della saga creata dalle zucche...
Sicuramente, almeno a mio parere questo "Keeper Of The Seven Keys part I" non può reggere il confronto con Walls e Keeper part II, sia per la qualità delle canzoni che per il numero ridotto di queste, ma non posso negare che esso presenta un'importanza storica colossale per lo sviluppo del metal, segnando definitivamente il sound degli Helloween, con i quali poi sono stati conosciuti in tutto il mondo.
