Niente giri di parole: "The Dark Ride" è un calcio, una badilata in pieno viso all'happy power metal che per tanti anni le mitiche zucche di Amburgo hanno portato avanti con canzoni potenti, melodiche e per certi versi spassose. Per questo motivo "The Dark Ride" è un album controverso che i più vecchi fand delle zucche d'Amburgo non riescono proprio a digerire. Facciamo un breve riassunto della loro storia, complicata, densa e ricca di continui cambiamenti di line up: flop clamorosi e successi totali.
Si inizia con tre album pazzeschi sul finire degli '80. Power metal acerbo, veloce e maledettamente potente e chitarristico per il debutto "Walls Of Jericho" che spopola con una produzione orrenda e una voce stonata (quella di Kai Hansen). Rincoglionimento generale? No, curiosità per un lavoro passionale, veloce per un genere aggressivo, ma meravigliosamente melodico nella fase di assolo e break. (Cfr. ascoltare How Many Tears e Ride The Sky tanto per fare due nomi). Con l'arrivo del singer Michael Kiske avviene la svolta melodica della band e la pubblicazione in successione dei "Keeper Of The Seven Keys part I e II". In pratica la "Bibbia del power metal melodico" che va tanto per la maggiore da una decina di anni. I Want Out, Future World, Eagle Fly Free, Dr. Stein, Rise And Fall sono canzoni che vengono puntualmente prese come modello di "ispirazione", per non dire imitazione, dalle leve emergenti ancora a 20 anni di distanza dalla pubblicazione dei Keeper. Con la dipartita di Kai Hansen, destinazione Gamma Ray, gli Helloween vanno in contro a una crisi, salvandosi con due dischetti dotati di una minor propensione metallara.
Il controverso "Chamaleon", che segue "Pink Bubbole Go Apes", sancisce la fine di un'era con l'abbandono di Kiske, indirizzato a una breve carriera solista. Il suicidio nel 1993 del batterista, che colto da depressione si getta contro un treno in corsa, è il punto più buio della storia degli Helloween. Weikath si prende in spalla la band e con l'innesto di Deris alla voce e di Uli Kusch alla batteria, riporta in auge le nuove zucche grazie ad un songwriting ispirato. Esclalation di tre album di power metal allegro e potente e gli Helloween rinascono fino a "Better Than Raw" del 1998. Poi arriva il calcio, la badilata in faccia al caro happy power metal che risponde al nome di "The Dark Ride", appunto.
Il lato oscuro e mai titolo fu più azzeccato. Le melodie ariose, allegre si possono ritrovare solamente in All Over The Nations e Salvation. Già con l'opener l'ascoltatore è spiazzato. Il riff di Mr. Torture e il cantato sporco di Deris ci proiettano in un sound nuovo per zucche. Le melodie fungono da contorno, da mero arricchimento per cori curati ma mai pomposi, mentre il vero fulcro del disco è rappresentato dall'uso certosino di tastiere oscure, linee vocali ruvide, riff, assoli giri di basso e cambi di ritmo che ben si sposano con un power metal aggressivo e scevro di doppia cassa. Canzoni come Mirror Mirror e Escalation 666 vedono Andi Deris esaltarsi in tonalità basse e non più prigioniero del fantasma di Kiske e dei suoi acuti. Weikath e Grapow non vanno alla frenetica ricerca di assoli fulminei, ma erigono muri metallici con riff pesanti per puro headbanging. Anche il singolo If I Could Fly che ha una buona propensione melodica, è un mid tempo ipnotico e dalle tinte gotiche. I Live For Your Pain, We Damn The Night, The Departed (Sun In Going Down) sono tutte canzoni che ben si sposano con questa nuova rivoluzione sonora da parte della band che il power melodico lo ha inventato. Meno velocità ed assoli per un heavy metal più cerebrale, potente e cadenzato. Il cd si conclude con la title track. Un gioiello firmato Weikath con una meraviglioso lungo break e una selva di cambi di ritmo per 8 minuti eccezionali in continuo movimento e degni di chiudere un cd di rottura.
"The Dark Ride", proprio perché rinnega con forza il passato (anche recente perché dista anni luce anche da "Better Than Raw") è un cd che da molti fan è stato odiato. Io tuttavia credo che Andi Deris offra la sua miglior prestazione e il livello del songwriting, affidato in gran parte a Kusch e Grapow, sia elevato con quel giusto mix di melodicità e potenza. La produzione è professionale e ti incita ad alzare il volume. Un disco, quindi, che ha fatto incazzare e deluso molti fans che non si aspettavano questa svolta. Quasi per scusarsi Weikath, dopo il tour, ha licenziato dei due innovatori sopra citati che formeranno i Masterplan ed è tornato all'happy power metal con "Rabbit Don't Coem Easy" e "Keeper III" (a mio parere mediocri).
Io sono convinto che "The Dark Ride" sia un grande album delle zucche anche se totalmente alieno al resto della discografia e lo consiglio senza remore a chi ama l'heavy in generale e non solo i Keepers Of The Keys.
