Sicuramente quando si parla di cd registrati dal vivo è molto difficile trovarne uno che arrivi almeno a sfiorare la perfezione. Difficile ma non impossibile, visto che siamo stati abituati a venire a contatto con delle pietre miliari del metal come "Live After Death", "Live Shit" e "Decade Of Aggression". Ci terrei però ad aggiungere a questi capolavori anche un altro lavoro dal vivo, cioe "Alive In Athens" dei grandissimi Iced Earth, band molto particolare che è riuscita ad unire Thrash, Heavy e Power in una cosa sola regalando grandissime soddisfazioni alla scena Metal. Non voglio dilungarmi molto, quindi metterò subito una cosa in chiaro: questo live è una vera bomba!!! Perfetto in ogni suo punto di vista, dove le canzoni (tra l'altro tratte da tutti i lavori della band senza sottovalutare nessun album) sono suonate talmente bene da far sembrare il live un falso registrato in studio, visto anche l'ottimo mixaggio curato da Jim Morris, che non poteva veramente far meglio. Altro punto di forza è l'eccezionale line-up, che oltre al capo John Schaffer alla chitarra ritmica e l'incredibile Mattew Barlow alla voce annoverava al suo interno Larry Tarnowski alla chitarra solista, James McDonough al basso, Brent Smedley alla batteria e Rick Risemberg alle tastiere, capaci di dare vita a tre ore di live veramente indimenticabili.
Il primo cd si apre con le urla dei fan Ateniesi che non stanno più nella pelle ed aspettano impazienti l'inizio del concerto, quando finalmente la band entra in scena con "Burning Times", opener dell'ultimo "Something Wiked This Way Comes" che effettivamente si presenta bene come canzone di apertura grazie ai suoi riffs granitici, per dare spazio a "Vengeance Is Mine" tratta dall'altro capolavoro "The Dark Saga", molto trascinante come la successiva "Pure Evil", tratta da "Night Of The Stormrider".
Sembra che non sia ancora finito il periodo di head-banging, dato che "My Own Saviour" tiene ancora i fans sulle corde, ma sono solo quasi quattro minuti visto che finalmente arriva il turno della sensazionale "Melancholy (Holy Martyr)", ballata dove il pubblico canta assieme a Barlow...Immancabile! Immancabile come la prossima canzone, infatti da "Burnt Offerings" si impone la grandissima "Dante's Inferno", mastodontica in tutti i suoi 16 minuti e mezzo, suonata veramente molto bene. "The Hunter" e la sensazionale "Travel in Stygian" fanno aumentare il numero di canzoni granitiche del primo disco, che si chiude molto bene con "Slave to The Dark" e "A Question Of Heaven"...
Purtroppo il primo cd si è concluso, ma ne abbiamo ancora altri due da esplorare per un totale di ancora due ore che sicuramente non deluderanno le nostre esigenti aspettative. "Dark Saga" apre il secondo disco, un canzone molto carina, che fa da preludio alle potenti "Last Laugh" e "Last December" ma che però sono trascurabili dinnanzi alla canzone successiva, quella struggente ballad-capolavoro qual'è "Watching Over Me", scritta da Schaffer per un caro amico morto in un incidente stradale... I nostri ragazzi la interpretano benissimo, tanto che il pubblico ateniese canta tutta la canzone a squarciagola con Barlow... Chiusa questa splendida parentesi i nostri amici tornano a suonare duro con tre brani tratti da "Night Of The Stormrider", cioè "Angels Holocaust", "Stormrider" e "Path I Choose" che continuano a tenere alto il livello del live.
Torniamo ora alla calma con "I Died For You", che non fa altro che passare il testimone alla monumentale "Something Wicked Trilogy", formata dal trio "Prophecy"-"Birth Of The Wicked"-"The Coming Course", la quale lascia però l'onore della chiusura del disco a "Iced Earth", un po' l'inno della band, la quale è l'unica che viene proposta in maniera un po' diversa dalla versione studio, ma che comunque risulta molto bella.
Andiamo avanti con la nostra recensione descrivendo anche l'ultimo cd, aperto con la potente "Stand Alone" che lascia spazio alla pioggia di terzine di "Cast In Stone" e poi ad un'altro macigno come "Desert Rain", delle vere chicche. Potremmo probabilmente dire che l'ultimo disco si presenta come il più violento dei tre, dato che successivamente troviamo altre songs incontrollabili come "Brainwashed", la grandissima "Disciples Of The Lie", "When The Night Falls" e "Diary", che non fanno altro che confermare le puone capacità tecniche degli Iced Earth.
Finalmente con "Blessed Are You" si ricalmano le acque, anche se la chiusura del cd e del live viene affidata ad un'altra canzone rocciosa qual' è violate, ottima song per terminare uno splendido concerto e,come ciliegina sulla torta alla fine della canzone i nostri propongono come outro il primo riff di "The Trooper" (serve che dica di chi è?)...
Purtroppo il live è terminato, e devo ammettere che finiti i suoi 180 minuti di durata è sempre dura ritornare alla vita reale, sapere di essere stesi sul letto invece di trovarsi tra la folla di fans impazziti che vicino al palco Ateniese pogano sotto le note di una grandissima band! In fine ripeto le mie convinzioni: a mio parere questo è uno dei migliori live metal di tutti i tempi, capace di giocarsela con molti più conosciuti e magari uscirne vincente, ma queste sono opinioni personali. Tre ore di musica intensa, avvincente ed accattivante che hanno portato gli Iced Earth sull'olimpo del metal...
