Gli Iced Earth del 2007 sembrano sempre più vivere nell'incertezza: testimone di ciò è una line-up traballante ormai da sempre. Dopo la dipartita di Richard Christy, sostituito da Brent Smedley, e quella di Santolla, sostituito da Troy Seele, i Nostri si imbarcano in un progetto davvero ambizioso: Schaffer già l'aveva concepito nel 1998, durante le registrazioni di "Something Wicked This Way Comes", e si tratta di un concept album basato sulla famigerata Something Wicked Trilogy, canzoni ispirate a cospirazioni e complotti di una razza aliena (generata dalla fantasia dello stesso Schaffer) ai danni dell'umanità intera. Ma Jon decide di accantonare il progetto per dedicarsi al primo live album della band: "Alive In Athens". Questo nome dovrebbe dirvi qualcosa... Si può tutto sommato dire che Schaffer abbia fatto la cosa migliore!!!
Dopo quasi 10 anni, il progetto viene ritirato fuori, ed ecco partorito l'ottavo LP della band americana: "Something Wicked Part I - Framing Armageddon", il primo di una trilogia di proporzioni epiche (l'uscita del secondo episodio, Something Wicked Part II - Revelation Abomination, è attesa entro il 2008).
Che dire? L'impressione data è che probabilmente Schaffer si è montato la testa: riff taglienti, ma a volte troppo scontati ("Order Of The Rose"), canzoni infarcite da chorus che si ripetono all'infinito e che alla lunga stancano ("A Charge To Keep", "Ten Thousand Strong") e ben otto intermezzi, tra strumentali ("Something Wicked Part II", "The Awekening") e introduzioni alle canzoni successive ("Reflections", "Execution"). Sembra quasi che la band (anzi, Schaffer, visto che Owens e Smedley sembrano che siano stati estraniati dal progetto...) abbia scritto sotto forzatura, si sente proprio che manca quella rabbia tipica di album come "Night Of The Stormirider", si capisce che una buona idea come quella di un concept su Seth Abominae sia stata rovinata un pò dall'eccessiva boria che alcune canzoni trasudano.
Certo, non è tutto da buttare via: "The Clouding" è davvero un piacere ascoltarla, il chorus di "Infiltrate And Assimilate" è davvero ipnotico, senza tralasciare la potenza di canzoni come "Framing Armageddon" e "Setian Massacre", con un songwriting davvero convincente e ben strutturato.
Il tour promozionale non si è rivelato affatto un fallimento, segno che i fan hanno ancora voglia di scapocciare sotto il palco con gli Iced, ma di sicuro "Framing Armageddon" rappresenta l'episodio meno riuscito dell'era Owens, nonostante sia comunque un album ascoltabilissimo: da Schaffer e soci mi sarei aspettato di più. Ora non ci resta solo che aspettare: Barlow è tornato all'ovile, con grandissima gioia di tutti i fan, nonostante l'eccelsa bravura del suo predecessore.
Quali saranno le sorti della terra? Riuscirà Seth Abominae a distruggere la razza umana? Ma sopratutto quale sarà il destino degli Iced Earth? Lo sapremo all'uscita di "Revelation Abomination"!

Il confine tra il grandioso e il grandiosamente noioso è molto labile e sottile.
Jon Schaffer rimane un axe-man dalla consumata bravura e classe, anche se i tempi d'oro probabilmente non torneranno più.
