Aspettavo con una certa curiosità il nuovo album degli Interpol dopo aver amato alla follia "Turn On The Bright Lights", vera e propria colonna sonora del mio 2002 e poi essere stato deluso dal successivo "Antics" che a distanza di tre anni posso in tutta sincerità definire complessivamente bruttino.

In realtà al primo impatto "Our Love To Admire" spiazza. Mi attendevo un album lineare con le solite sonorità "alla interpol", una new wave moderna con brani veloci e taglienti ma fedele alla struttura classica anni 80 magistralmente restaurata dai quattro ragazzi di NYC. Ma Non è così. Innanzitutto il disco suona diverso sin dal primo istante e somiglia solo in parte a quanto ascoltato in passato. In particolare mi colpiscono la potenza e la ruvidezza dei suoni delle chitarre che sembrano strabordare fuori dalle cuffie in modo sorprendente, sembrano davvero lame taglienti (immagino le dita di Kessler sanguinanti). Le tastiere molto più evidenti e curate arricchiscono ogni brano dall'inizio alla fine dell'album. Ma è soprattutto la scrittura dei brani la novità, perchè non segue la linearità dei primi dischi ma cerca, aggiungerei giustamente, soluzioni nuove e più complesse.

Il risultato è che al primo ascolto l'album è poco accessibile, è introverso si nasconde, si lascia intuire ma non si svela ed uno strato di suono compatto e superficiale nasconde un po' tutto fino a regalare una sensazione di confusione generale. L'album è scuro, cupo, potente e diretto. Non gioca, non ride, non ti fa battere il piede e non cerca di essere piacevole, ma al contrario quasi ti aggredisce.

Ci vogliono in realtà cinque ascolti per le orecchie sufficientemente allenate perché tutto quanto cominci ad avere un senso. Il trittico d'apertura è fulminante, tre brani profondamente diversi l'uno dall'altro come concezione, ma assolutamente perfetti nel risultato. Cuore in gola. La bellissima Pioneer To The Falls è una ballata crepuscolare lenta introdotta da uno strano arpeggio sgraziato e metallico e minimalista ma lentamente cresce inesorabile e svela tutta la sua bellezza struggente in un finale quasi epico, così come struggente è la seconda traccia No I In Threesome dove il ritmo aumenta decisamente e nonostante un inizio buffo il tono ritorna subito oscuro e a tratti disperato infilandosi in un ritornello strepitoso che fa venire voglia non tanto di cantare ma di urlare. Segue The Scale canzone strepitosa con il suo incedere marziale e incalzante regala dei momenti da pelle d'oca che definirei di una "tristezza assoluta" fino ad un breve ma intenso "assolo al contrario" che chiude il cerchio perfetto.

Il pur bellissimo singolo Heirich Maneuver (chitarre fantastiche) sembra quasi interrompere l'incanto, è l'unico brano riferibile ai vecchi Interpol ma è pur sempre un gran bel pezzo con un tiro assassino e trascinante. La quinta traccia Mammoth spacca davvero il culo, Fogarino picchia giù duro e gli altri gli vanno dietro alla grande, ma non c'è solo potenza, c'è consapevolezza, tecnica e grande maturità.
Pace is The Trick colpisce per un ritornello grandioso che diventerà un inno nei concerti e per le chitarre monumentali. Strano e bello il finale con uno suono che parte da lontano e poi sovrasta tutto e sembra prodotto da un digeridu del tutto fuori contesto. La tensione cala nel settimo brano All Fired Up, che inizia come un brano dei Radiohead (vediamo se indovinate quale) ma nel suo incedere chiassoso sembra in verità non portare a nulla. Al contrario del precedente Mammoth qui la ritmica martellante sembra meno consapevole e non convince nel suo percorso.

E' soltanto un episodio perché nella successiva Rest My Chemistry che attacca con un suggestivo pianoforte carico di eco e poi attacca potente e dolce nella ritmica e nelle limpidissime chitarre, il tono ritorna subito ai massimi livelli, forse tr i più alti mai toccati dagli Interpol. In questo brano si evidenzia in modo nuovo e indiscutibile la voce di Banks che pare finalmente essere un po' meno timido ed interpreta i momenti silenziosi in modo coinvolgente e convincente. La successiva Who Do You Think è un altro esempio di consapevolezza, potenza e controllo e miscela in modo apprezzabile la violenza elettrica dell'arrangiamento con una malinconia fragile di fondo, ne viene fuori un brano potente ma sostanzialmente dolce.

A questo punto arriva la svolta che non ti aspetti... le ultime due tracce cambiano completamente strada. Wrecking Bell è una ballata struggente tutta intorno ad un brevissimo giro di chitarra che si ripete incessante ed una melodia che tocca le corde giuste. L'arrangiamento sembra tendere verso atmosfere da "vecchio west" specialmente nel lungo e bellissimo finale da orchestra. La conclusiva Lighthouse è ancora più sorprendente. La scelta dell'arrangiamento sorprende, una chitarra super-riverberata e scardinata, suonata come un mandolino, fa da tappeto alla melodia bellissima cantata da Banks che è l'essenza del brano che tende però mio avviso ad essere eccessivamente lungo in questa sua fase. Colpisce un finale grandioso anch'esso a tinte old west dove si sparisce l'orchestra ma si aggiungono le classiche campane alla Sergio Leone... ed il disco finisce, lasciando comunque una splendida sensazione.

La New Wave perfetta dei primi due album sembra essere sostanzialmente superata o comunque si è evoluta in qualcosa che suona come sostanzialmente nuovo. Gli Interpol si ridestano, piazzano un bel colpo e cercando strade nuove tornano ai livelli del loro esordio.

2) Ho seguito in questi anni tutta la scena della nuova New Wave anglo/americana, non ho condiviso molte delle critiche rivolte ferocemente a tutti gli esponenti di essa soprattutto per l'accusa di essere tutti scopiazzatori degli Interpol e sono arrivato ad amare alcuni gruppi come Editors e Departure che in qualche modo e per motivi diversi mi hanno coinvolto. Ma quando ho ascoltato questo "Our Love To Admire" mi sono immediatamente reso conto che gli interpol sono ancora 10 gradini sopra tutti gli altri.
