La discografia postuma di Jimi Hendrix è qualcosa di impressionante se si pensa che in vita pubblicò solo tre studio album, un live ed una raccolta. Va anche detto che la situazione legale sui diritti ufficiali inerenti sia al materiale già pubblicato che ai nastri ancora in archivio nel tempo ha subito diverse dispute. Oggi a gestire ufficialmente la discografia del meticcio vi è la "Experience Hendrix MCA Records" autorizata dalla "Hendrix Family", a capo della quale vi è la sorella del grande chitarrista. A contrapporsi vi sono svariate altre più piccole case discografiche che si contendono le cosiddette "briciole", con le quali a volte però riescono a realizzare prodotti sfiziosi.
Questo è il caso della "Purple Haze Records", che ha già pubblicato molti titoli interessanti fra cui, nel 2005, questa raccolta in due cd, "Truth and Emotion", da me acquistata alla Feltrinelli la scorsa settimana al prezzo di soli sette euro e novanta centesimi. Si tratta di un prodotto veramente intrigante. Nel primo cd vi sono una serie di out-takes registrate in studio fra il '69 ed il '70, molte delle quali hanno già trovato spazio in svariati album postumi quali "The Cry of Love", "First Rays of new Rising Sun", "Live at Fillmore East" e "Live at Berckeley". Vi sono contenute alcune delle ultime incisioni di Hendrix prima che la sorte se lo portasse via a soli ventott'anni.
Siamo di fronte ad un Jimi più funky, molti sanno infatti che nell'ultimo periodo era suo desiderio riavvicinarsi a questo genere, molto apprezzato dalla comunità afroamericana, ed allontanarsi un po' dal rock e dalla psichedelia. Nella tracklist le splendide Izabella, Message to love, Night Bird flying, Freedom, Earth Blues, Stepping Stone, oltre alla cover di Dylan, Drifting escape ed una straordinaria jam basata sul tema di Blue Suede Shoes. Poi gli strumentali Pali gap e Hey baby (New Rising sun). Veramente ottima musica ragazzi! Ma se il primo cd è notevole, la vera sorpresa (ed il motivo che mi ha spinto a comperare il prodotto) è il secondo cd, la registrazione, penso integrale anche se non ne posso esser certo, dell'ultimo concerto di Jimi con la Experience, Mitch Mitchell alla batteria e Noel Redding al basso, il 24 maggio 1969 alla Sports Arena di San Diego (California). Un concerto eccellente con molti dei classici immortali, Fire, Hey Joe, Foxy Lady, Purple Haze, Vodoo Chile, una stravolta rilettura di Red House, ed un eccellente medley basato su Spanish castle magic, nel quale trova spazio un imperdibile drum solo di Mitchell ed una rivisitazione di Sunshine of your love dei Cream. Nella track list sul retro della custodia non è indicata I Don't live today, pezzo invece presente nella registrazione e suonato magistralmente prima di Foxy lady, piccola imprecisione tipica dei prodotti non ufficiali, ma niente di grave (sarebbe stato molto peggio il contrario). Vi è una Experience in ottima forma, nonostante fosse alle sue battute finali. Il concerto è di grande energia e con un sound molto grezzo, tipico del trio che dal vivo proponeva i propri pezzi in una veste più primitiva e spontanea, con grande spazio per le improvvisazioni. In Vodoo Chile sembra esserci qualche problema tecnico, ma niente di troppo rilevante. Si tratta di un live quasi inedito, dico quasi perchè una versione di questo show fu pubblicata come quarto cd di un cofanetto intitolato "Stages", cofanetto però quasi introvabile e comunque molto più oneroso. Immagino che vi interesserà sapere come si sentono i cd, visto che è un prodotto non ufficiale, beh, devo dire che l'audio è buono, forse il volume di uscita è un po' basso, ma direi che nel complesso non ci si può affatto lamentare.
All'interno un libricino con qualche nota in inglese, qualche rielaborazione grafica di alcune foto di Hendrix e la segnalazione di altri prodotti editi dalla Purple Haze. Insomma una raccolta molto ben fatta, con un prezzo a dir poco concorrenziale. Forse non consigliato a quei pochi che Hendrix non lo conoscono, ai quali ovviamente si consiglia di partire con i suoi album storici, ma sicuramente appetibile da parte dei fans più esigenti in cerca di chicche e rarità.
