É difficile raccontare un disco così, pieno delle influenze più varie, da van Morrison a Joni Mitchell, da Laura Nyro agli Steely Dan. Rock, Blues, Jazz, Folk e Soul si mescolano in un'armonia che però non è affatto disomogenea, anzi parla di un equilibrio miracoloso.
La voce dolce e potente di Joan Armatrading trova finalmente una band degna di lei in questo terzo disco, per il quale la cantante anglo/giamaicana si affida al produttore Glyn Johns che le raccoglie intorno il meglio del meglio: Jerry Donahue e Dave Mattacks dai Fairport Convention, Kenny Jones dai Faces, Peter Wood (turnista di lusso: Al Stewart, Roger Waters, Bob Dylan e Lou Reed tra gli altri) forniscono un tappeto sonoro di tutto rispetto a cui si aggiungono occasionalmente altri ospiti di lusso.
Johns avrà modo di dichiarare che questo fu il miglior disco da lui prodotto e visto che nel suo palmares ci sono perle come “Who's next” e “Slowhand” direi che la cosa è degna di nota.
Il disco si apre con "Down to Zero", una ballata dolceamara in cui una donna tradita si dichiara pronta a perdonare e ad accogliere di nuovo il suo uomo quando tornerà (when you will fall, fall at my door). L'andamento quasi-gospel fa pensare al miglior Van Morrison, la 12 corde e il pianoforte si intrecciano in un crescendo che sfocia in uno splendido solo di pedal-steel (B.J. Cole).
Nel brano successivo, "Help Yourself", entrano in scena Donahue e Mattacks e il suono si fa più jazzy, con cambi di ritmo imprevisti e un canto molto più vicino al soul. Il sound jazzy continua con "Water with the Wine", allegra e scanzonata, piena di energia e voglia di vivere. Qui Joan mostra di aver ascoltato molto bene Joni Mitchell.
"Love and Affection" è forse il maggior hit della carriera della Armatrading ed è il brano a cui sarà affidato il compito di portare il disco nelle chart. È una ballata stre-pi-to-sa, dolce senza essere melensa, con arrangiamenti mai banali, quando entra il sax di Jimmy Jewel sono già steso al tappeto.
Il livello rimane altissimo con "Save me", che chiude il primo lato del disco: una invocazione intima e profonda introdotta dalla 12 corde della stessa Joan a cui Donahue e Mattacks offrono preziosi ricami.
Il secondo lato si apre in salsa jazz, con il basso di Dave Markee in grande spolvero. "Join the boys" e "People" strizzano l'occhio agli Steely Dan e alla loro capacità di coniugare easy listening e arrangiamenti geniali. Forse troppo easy la seconda, ma resta comunque una coppia di pezzi di grande interesse.
Tornano le ballate con la dolcissima "Somebody who loves you", cesellata dal mandolino e dalla slide guitar, fino a giungere a quello che è forse il pezzo più rock dell'album, "Like Fire", in cui Joan imbraccia la chitarra acustica e dà prova di un notevole talento duettando con Bryn Haworth alla slide e si arriva infine al pezzo che preferisco nel disco, "Tall in the saddle", dove si mescolano toni intimi e drammatici con un arrangiamento mai banale e un solo memorabile di Donhaue.
In conclusione il disco contiene già tutti i temi che si ritroveranno nel successivo e più celebrato “Me myself & I”, ma a mio giudizio la produzione di Johns lo rende di una spanna superiore, pur essendo anch'esso un ottimo disco. Se volete avere un solo disco della Armatrading quello da comprare è questo, ma perché limitarsi?
