"Body and soul" esce nel 1984, due anni dopo quel capolavoro incredibile che è (almeno per me) "Night and Day" (da me definito il migliore album della storia del pop-rock).
In mezzo, tra "Night and day" e "Body and soul" c'è un mezzo passo falso, la colonna sonora di "Mikes' murder", per quanto mi riguarda il peggior lavoro dell'intera carriera di Joe Jackson. "Body and soul" è invece un bel lavoro, anche se non fa gridare al miracolo come ""Night and day". Questo album è comunque l'ennessima dimostrazione di quanto Joe Jackson sia il più grande trasformista della storia della musica pop. Questo "Body and soul" sembra infatti scritto da una persona diversa rispetto a quella che ha composto "Night and day" (di solo due anni precedente) o "Look Sharp" (di 5 anni precedente), così come è sorprendente sentire gli arrangiamenti di questo album in cui la classica , il pop, il jazz, i ritmi latini, la musica anni '50 e '60 si fondono in modo perfetto, portando comunque lo stile di Joe Jackson ad approdare verso nuovi lidi e nuove sfere sonore.
Gli arragimanenti e la produzione sono la cosa migliore di questo lavoro, le canzoni non sono invece (come già detto) al livello del precedente "Night and day", però alcuni brani sono decisamente eccellenti, come l'iniziale "The verdicit", riflessione drammatica e profonda sulla vita e su ciò che ci aspetta (forse) dopo la nostra dipartita.
Eccellente anche "Not here not now", triste, lenta, malinconia, drammatica e straziante come poche altre canzoni sull'amore impossibile. "You can't get what you want" è una sferzata di energia improvvisa, frustata jazz-rock tra capo e collo, geniale e originalissima. "Go for it" sembra uscire diretta dagli anni '50. Ritmo forsenatto, energia e divertimento, per un'altro grande brano. La seconda parte della'lbum è decisamente meno riuscita della prima. "Loisaida" e Hhear of ice" sono due bei brani, ma leggermente freddi, sembrano un pò degli esercizi di stile, anche se di una perfezione esecutiva da manuale. "Happy ending" è un'ottimo brano dal ritmo anni '60 e "Be my number two" è una canzone carina e dal testo romantico e divertente allo stesso tempo, però non certo al livello delle pagine migliore del nostro amato Joe Jackson.
Album di passaggio, ma comunque di valore.
