Me ne stavo lì, per terra, impaurito e sanguinante a guardarmi la mano: quella che stoicamente, come un guerriero di prima linea del “Gladiatore” di Ridley Scott, si è immolata sul quel sentiero-campo di battaglia in favore della mia testa. La pelle del palmo pare una tenda alzata nella quale terra e sassolini sono entrati a far festa al caldo sorseggiando un buon bicchiere di piastrine al frenetico lavoro. Provo a ricacciarli indietro questi petrosi tifosi ribelli prendendo la maglietta a mo’ di scopa di saggina. Chissà, penso tra me e me mentre la bendo alla meglio, forse la ferita si richiuderà e qualche minuscolo sassolino rimarrà per sempre la sotto a farmi compagnia. Come certi ricordi, che non c’è mercurocromo o aureomicina che tenga. Riaffiorano nella mia mente a random: spesso sono le note di un cd che me li portano nuovamente a galla e poi li fanno sbattere sulla battigia dell’ipotalamo.
La voce di Roy Khan non è solo bella e tecnicamente ineccepibile. Mi sono spesso divertito negli anni a farla ascoltare ad orecchie abituate a generi musicali completamente diversi e quell’ugola li ha conquistati tutti. “Musica davvero di merda: una garanzia come sempre Paolo, ma stavolta mi hai tirato fuori una voce pazzesca!” Uno dopo l’altro: birilli cadono colpiti dalla perfetta traiettoria di uno strike. In questo live album “One Cold Winter’s Night” del 2006 i Kamelot mostrano un amalgama invidiabile e con un buon numero di album alle spalle riescono ad offrire alla platea una tracklist di livello. Ma tutto passa in secondo piano se confrontato alla sua prestazione: semplicemente vertiginosa.
Acuti toccanti, dolci e fragili come la prima parte di “Elizabeth” mi portano alla mente quelle labbra divenute in quei mesi aride; quelle labbra che si avvicinano, titubanti all’inizio e poi, improvvisamente, come calamite si ritrovano nuovamente unite. Si scoprono essere ancora una volta assetate e passionali unendosi in un bacio infinito che fa tornare indietro il tempo. Melodia pura nel duetto con la bella Simone Simons degli Epica nell'armonica “The Haunting” e poi ancora, con “Moonlight”, per riesumare quei momenti romantici al calar della sera con il vento leggero come sola tiepida coperta su una panchina ed un gelato che cola tra le risate stupide. Litigate ed incomprensioni per ragioni assurde nate in un baleno: come funghi spuntati dalla sera alla mattina dopo un acquazzone. In un battito di ciglia le vedo riaffiorare e prendere vita nei ricordi grazie alle possenti “The Black Halo” e “Soul Society” e “When The Lights Are Down”: sfuriate metalliche di rara fattura con riff arcigni ben incastrati in linee melodiche di sicura presa nella fase di ritornello.
E poi si fa la pace e tutto sembra più leggero, facile e arioso; gli up tempo melodici e stereotipati come un film della Walt Disney “Center Of The Universe”, “Farewell” e “Karma” capaci di terminare con un crescendo da fuochi di artificio nelle lenzuola roventi. E poi qualcosa si incrina: no, non è una sana sfuriata, è proprio una crepa che non c'è stucco che tenga. Una falla che inesorabilmente manderà a puttane tutto. La tristezza che riesce a trasmettere “Abandoned” riporta a galla tutto ciò e mi fa quasi venire voglia di andare ad aprire il cassetto lassù, nella mia stanza, per rileggere un po’ del passato in forma di bigliettini melensi e rimpiangerlo magari; perché no?
"One Cold Winter’s Night" è un cd talmente coinvolgente che mi è costato 2.500,00 euro. Distanze di sicurezza e strada bagnata, recita il tristo verbale scritto in tipico ed illegibile burocratichese italico. Stronzate. Il vero motivo per il quale sono finito a baciare il culo metallico di quella Golf grigia si chiama “Nights Of Arabia”. La ricordo ancora rimbombare, mentre cerco di liberarmi dell’airbag in un bagno di adrenalina. Maledetto Roy Kahn!

La voce di Khan ha qualcosa di magico, è già di per sé l'essenza della melodia.
Questo live è una vera gemma, tecnicamente impreziosita da uno stuolo di telecamere, ben 18, dirette ad arte da Patric Ullaeus.
