Tre, o quattro anni or sono quando ho fatto mio questo cd, l'ho ben presto etichettato come insulso e l'ho riposto con cura in un angusto cassetto pensando che da lì mai più sarebbe uscito. Decisamente troppo difficile per le mie orecchie abituate a dissetarsi con melodie facili, facili. Solo pochi mesi fa quel cassetto l'ho riaperto e "The Black Halo" ha così ricominciato a girare nel mio stereo. Ho preso il libretto e cominciato a leggere il concept album.
FAUST/ ARIEL
I Kamelot sono una metal band assolutamente atipica, difficile ed originale e mi stupisce solo in parte la loro scelta di prendere spunto dall'opera massima di Goethe, il Faust, per le liriche del loro sesto disco. Il concept ha come oggetto principale un saggio alchimista (Ariel) che ha un'infinita sete di conoscenza e si lascia tentare da Mefistele (angelo cacciato dal paradiso) che scommette con Dio di riuscire ad avere l'anima dell'uomo. La sua anima è in bilico tra la salvezza e la perdizione ed è pervasa da mille domande senza risposta che lo assillano continuamente.
Nella personale rivisitazione dell'opera Ariel (che nel disco precedente "Epica" aveva assistito al suicidio del suo grande amore Helena, per giunta in dolce attesa) viene come già accennato tentato da Mephisto che gli promette, in cambio della sua anima, di poter passare un momento di puro piacere. Un piacere talmente intenso e profondo che perfino lui, una persona disperata, alla fine avrebbe desiderato con tutto sé stesso che non finisse mai. Accetta ed arriva una bellissima donna che gli ricorda Helena in tutto e per tutto e con la quale fa l'amore appassionatamente. Pentito per quanto fatto (è ancora innamorato di Helena e sa perfettamente che non potrà mai cambiare questo stato), scappa e vaga con il peso di una coscienza tormentata. Capisce che l'umanità è troppo debole e non potrà mai vivere in un mondo perfetto. E' conscio che non troverà mai la verità e con quello che ha fatto non potrà mai raggiungere Dio e la sua amata. Si ritrova solo in un mondo abbandonato e pieno di angoscia per tutto il dolore che ha provocato a Helena e si sente responsabile della sua morte. L'unica cosa che sente di fare è affrontare Mephisto e rinnegare il suo patto diabolico. Non per ricercare la salvezza personale, ma per senso di giustizia. Affrontandolo e pentendosi del suo patto capisce che ogni persona ha i suoi credi, ma l'unica verità universale è l'amore. Al momento della sua morte forte della sua scoperta l'anima lascia il corpo e viene salvata in quanto agli occhi di Dio ha avuto il coraggio di rinnegare Mephisto. Può abbracciare Helena, mentre Mephisto, avendo perso la scommessa, sprofonda all'inferno per sempre.
LA TRASPOSIZIONE IN MUSICA
Trasporre in musica un concept album così non è certo cosa semplice, ma i Kamelot hanno le caratteristiche per riuscire ad esprimere la disperazione e il tormento del protagonista. La prima carta è rappresentata dal singer norvegese Roy Khan. Un cantante capace di esprimersi alla grande su tonalità basse, che centellina gli acuti e che in generale riesce bene ad immedesimarsi nel personaggio filosofico e triste di Ariel. Simone Simmons nelle vesti della "tentazione", Shagrath in quelle di Mephisto e Mari Youngblood nei panni di Melena completano il quadro dei cantanti veramente azzeccati. La musica dell'intero disco si muove su binari decisamente metallici e pesanti. Riff massicci molto spesso si incastrano con mid tempo epici ed ipnotici. E' questo il caso dell'opener "March of Mephisto" nella quale si alternano pause orchestrali ed un growl. Tra le canzoni più immediate si devono citare la veloce (doppio pedale) "When The Light Are Down" con un break neoclassico e mutevole e la super hit "Soul Society" che porta alla mente i tempi di Karma.
Ma i momenti più esaltanti sono rappresentati dal duetto tra Simone Simmons e Khan nel crescendo sinfonico "The Haunting". In "Abandoned" Roy entra nelle nostre orecchie con una voce profonda e calda che segue le linee melodiche del piano e dell'orchestra per 5 minuti di disperazione in musica. La rabbia sonora si espleta in "Moonlight" con le linee melodiche che provano, senza successo, a farsi largo tra il riffing ossessivo. Su tonalità oscure e per nulla rassicuranti si snoda anche il mid tempo "This Pain" sebbene mostri qualche apertura maggiore in fase di ritornello. Nella parte conclusiva del disco quando Ariel si ribella a Mephisto veniamo messi di fronte ad un power metal sinfonico trasbordante e pomposo."Nothing Ever Dies" porta con sé linee melodiche più ariose unite a pause di riflessione mentre nella conclusiva "Memento Mori" viene dato spazio alla mutevolezza. Come riuscire a trasporre in musica la scissione tra anima e corpo? I Kamelot ci provano per 9 nove minuti con atmosfere di attesa, un cantato spesso in sospiro in un crescendo che lascia grande spazio alle fasi strumentali ed al coro.
CONCLUSIONI
Un album non per tutti. Bisogna essere pazienti ed avere un orecchio allenato per digerire una tracklist del genere che se ne frega altamente dell'immediatezza. Tantissimi i break, i cambi di ritmo, gli intro e soprattutto una grandissima attenzione a far coincidere musica e testi con interpretazioni vocali e uso della musica classica in chiave metal. Le canzoni spesso vengono stravolte in itinere e l'uscita dalla solita struttura strofa-bridge-coro-assolo-strofa-coro non è l'eccezione, bensì la regola. Un cd volutamente impegnato che può offrire grandi soddisfazioni o annoiare terribilmente.

Una volta inserito il cd e chiusi gli occhi comincia l'avventura, un’avventura suggestiva che porta verso l’esplorazione di melodie, di luoghi, di colori, di uomini.
'Memento Mori' è senza dubbio il brano migliore... le emozioni hanno ormai raggiunto il punto più alto, oltre è impossibile andare.
