I Kiss. Con loro non cisono mezze misure. O li ami o li odi. O pensi che siano la più abietta degradazione dei paradigmi della cultura rock, o ritieni che rappresentino la cosa migliore che sia accaduta sulla terra dai tempi dell'invenzione degli spaghetti!!! Bhe, io amo i Kiss. Praticamente sono cresciuto con loro. Basti vedere la mia prima fotografia, ad un anno, dove tiro fuori la lingua a dismisura. . . un segno del destino. Ma a chi cacchio importa del mio destino?
Il gruppo di Eugene Klein e Stanley Eisen (veri nomi di Gene Simmonse Paul Stanley) è uno dei più contestati di tutta la storia. Gli più schizzinosi, o per meglio dire quelli che non capiscono un kaxxo di musica, li rimproverano per lo sfacciato orientamento commerciale, la sintonia con l'industria, le scenografie faraoniche, le provocazioni. . . Questi sciocchi non capiscono che i Kiss sono la conseguenza logica della dimensione mitica che ammanta le stelle del rock da quando questo genere di musica ha raggiunto la maggiore età negli anni Sessanta (comeha detto Gus Cabezas nella sua biografia sul gruppo). Se queste persone non si limitassero a criticare senza conoscere e si metterebbero ad ascoltare la musica dei Kiss, la maggior parte di loro cambierebbe idea. . . Quando Gene e Paul reclutarono Peter Criss eAce Frehley (Frehley, che era in condizioni economiche molto pietose, si presentò ai provini e fece un gran figurone ma nessuno aveva capito che era venuto lì per provare, lo credevano un mendicante) cominciarono a lavorare sul loroprimo LP appunto: KISS datato 1974, cui sarebbero seguiti una lunga serie.
Questo. . . THE VERY BEST OF KISS, è una delle loro tante raccolte, del 2002 per essere precisi e lo consigliai ad un mio amico che era a conoscenza della mia passione per il gruppo e che anche lui si volle avvicinare comunque a qualcosa di rock. . . (Ho salvato una vita non è vero? Uno che considerava Gianluca Grignani il Dio. . .). Riuscii nel mio intento e il mio amico rimase davvero affascinato. . . ricordo il suo commento. . . “ Le ho sentite tutte. . . dalla prima all'ultima, senza saltarle. . . ” Ah. . . quando un cd ti piace al primo ascolto allora è davvero un buon lavoro. 21 tracce in tutto. 75 minuti di pura atmosfera glam-hard-rock e metal con alcune perle che rimangono davvero impresse. Le tracce sono in ordine cronologico.
Sicomincia allora con “ Strutter” e “ Deuce” prese dal loro primo album omonimo appena citato prima. La prima, chiara e luminosa, scritta da Gene emigliorata da Paul (tra l'altro Paul era come dire il Salvatore della maggior parte dei brani del gruppo), la seconda nata da una “modifichina” da parte di Gene al riff di “ Bitch” degli Stones. Questi due brani sono un po' le “prime pietre” famose del gruppo, e disolito nei concerti venivano usate come da apripista, scaldando ben bene l'atmosfera.
Si prosegue con “ Got Tho Choose” e “ HotterThan Hell” dal secondo album del gruppo (dove in copertina apparivano ubriachi – un'idea del fotografo – con Criss che pavoneggiava con una ragazza e Stanley, quello messo peggio, che gli toccava il sedere) omonimo a quest'ultima. La prima molto graffiante, un'opera di Paul, e la seconda, sempre di Paul, un'autentica cannonata glam che col suo ritmo sincopato è molto orecchiabile.
Ancora, con la sensuale (guarda caso di Paul) “ C'mone And Love Me” che trovo davvero molto molto. . . non so come definirla, diciamo una canzone che ti mette la carica in tutto il corpo. Poi c'è il capolavoro. . . la prima Hit della storia del gruppo, presa non dall'album originario ma dal live ALIVE (definito da molti il migliore live degli anni 70). . . si tratta di “ Rock N Roll All Night” che sarebbe diventata la canzone di chiusura di tutti i loro concerti. Questa canzone, frutto di una combinazione tra Paul e Gene (il che dimostra come insieme erano una forza) nacque dalle ceneri di un altro brano, Drive Me Wild. PERFETTA! L'aggettivo giusto per questa canzone. Ancora più movimentata di C'mon And Love Me.
Le tracce numero 7, 8 e 9 sono quelle che furono la conferma del successo del gruppo, con l'album successivo al grande Live: DESTROYER. La 7 s'intitola “Detroit Rock City” e parla di un clamoroso incidente d'auto nella città dei motori per eccellenza. Pura dinamite, riff insuperabile e l'assolo nel finale con le due chitarre, ritmica di Paul e 6 corde di Ace. Las eguente è “ Shout It Out Loud” molto simile alla precedente nella potenza e ritmo. Sono canzoni geniali. . . un po'spaccatimpani ma con una melodicità equa, hanno una marcia in più . (Tra l'altro è la canzone dei Kiss più usata da molti gruppi per delle cover. . . molto bella quella dei Redd Kross). La numero 9 è tutt'altro di genere ma stessa pasta nel fatto che rimane impressa nella mente di chi la ascolta, sin dal primo ascolto. È “ Beth” una romantica ballata scritta e cantata dal batterista il “ gatto” Peter Criss, che dovette fare il sangue acido per convincere gli altri tre ad includerla nell'album. Fu inclusa e divenne ancora più famosa di Rock N Roll All Night. . . la prima canzone dei Kiss che entravanella Top 10.
“ I Want You” , “ Calling Dr. Love” e“ Hard Luck Woman” sono invece tratte dall'album ROCK AND ROLL OVER. La prima è molto curiosa: si inizia con note soavi. . . e dopo solo dieci secondi: L'ESPLOSIONE. . . un pochino più metal e heavy, insomma, nonmolto simile a Detroit Rock City e Rock N Roll All Night. La canzoneè firmata Stanley. La seconda segue un po' lo stile dellaprecedente anche se è di Gene. Hard Luck Woman invece è un'altra ballata scritta da Paul e necessaria al gruppo per tentar diripetere il successo ottenuto con Beth. Ed il successo si ripetè . La canzone passò dalla penna di Paul al canto di Peter. Ilrisultato è qualcosa di molto bello. . . melodico certo, più ritmico di Beth grazie alle chitarre.
Si prosegue con tre canzoni tratte da LOVE GUN (1977). Sono: “ I Stole Your Love” di Paul, “ Christine Sixteen” , di Gene e “ Love Gun” appunto, nuovamente di Paul. La prima sembra un ritorno a Shout It Out Loud, chitarre costanti che sovrappongono quasi il canto e rendono la canzone molto veloce. L'assolo “ Zeppeliniano” è una marcia in più La seconda è più leggera e ricorda Calling Dr. Love. In essa Gene si diverte a suonare il piano giusto giusto per le due note portanti. E qui siamo ad un altro grande capolavoro. Love Gun è qualcosa di forte. . . una “ Bomba” appunto. . . Non ci si stufa mai di ascoltare questa canzone. Esplosiva al massimo, questo è Hard Rock molto molto forte. . . la sei corde di Ace nel finale è poi un capolavoro. Una delle migliori dell'intero disco.
Intanto nel 78 i quattro pubblicarono un cd solista per ognuno. Il più venduto fu quello di Gene ma il migliore sicuramente quello di Ace. Ne è la prova che in questo The Best Of è presente infatti “ New York Groove” la traccia numero diciassette, da ACE FREHLEY. La canzone era una cover del brano di Russ Ballard ma molto migliorata (profondo inchino a Russ).
E qui ci avviamo verso la fine ma ancora negli anni 70 (sarà perché negli 80 i Kiss non fecero granché , a parte CREATURES OF THE NIGHT dell'82 è chiaro). “ I Was Made For Lovin' You” è qualcosa di unico nella musica dei Kiss. L'album da cui è tratta, DYNASTY, del 79, era molto influenzato dall'ondata di novità dance che in quegli anni spopolava. . . così anche i Kiss ci misero man forte ed il risultato fu un ennesimo capolavoro. Questo singolo poi è fantastico. Scritto da Stanley insieme a Vini Poncia, riflette una realtà parallela. . . come una profonda visione digitale. Un rock graffiante e potente e la musicalità , soprattutto grazie alle tastiere, che rendeva appunto il brano più dance che rock.
E qui arriviamo ai tre unici brani presi da album degli anni 80. Prima c'è “ I Love It Loud” da CREATURES OF THE NIGHT. Il brano è molto forte. Dei cori da stadio e delle grancasse che sembrano colpi di cannone (infatti l'album rimase famoso soprattutto per le batterie. . . il nuovo arrivato, Eric Carr, era proprio una promessa). “ Lick It Up” (che poi vuol dire 'succhialo') preso dall'album omonimo dell'83 è simile, ma poco poco, al precedente nelle sonorità . Il finale è strepitoso. “ Forever” da HOT IN THE SHADE dell'89 fu una commercialissima e dolciastra ballata scritta da Stanley insieme ad uno specialista del settore, Micheal Bolton, e pensata apposta per far sospirare le bambinette. È uno dei singoli più conosciuti dei Kiss ed uno dei più belli in assoluto. Probabilmente quando il gruppo scrisse la scaletta diquesto Best Of, Forever fu la prima ad essere inserita: immancabile. D'altronde è giustificabile tanto clamore. La canzone è davvero stupenda.
E qua siamo alla fine. L'unico brano preso dagli anni 90 ed ultimo di questo cd è “ God Gave Rock And Roll To You II” preso da REVENGE, l'album che fu la “vendetta” dei Kiss nel 92. A mio parere il più bell'album della loro carriera escludendo il live ALIVE. La canzone è uno straordinario adattamento sinfonico da parte di Paul e Gene (insieme al loro amico Bob Ezrin e Russ Ballard) di una canzone degli Argent – gruppo a cui i Kiss facevano da apripista ai loro esordi – nonmolto conosciuta. Venne inclusa come colonna sonora nel film “ Bill& Ted Bogus Journey” con Keanu Reeves. Testo fantastico (vi consiglio la traduzione) e musiche incredibili. I cori sono davveroemozionanti e partecipano un po' tutti i quattro componenti. . . “ Scrivere questa canzone fu come una festa per noi” Dichiarò Stanley “ Ci rincontrammo con vecchi amici e il nostro successo si marmificò ” . Quindi immancabile inquesto Best Of. Chiude benissimo il cd.
Concludendo, questo THE VERY BEST OF KISS riassume molto bene, anzi, benissimo, lacarriera dei mitici Kiss e fa capire veramente a quei culattoni che giudicano il gruppo come una profonda degradazione. . . vabbè , lo avevo già detto. . . solo perché vedono i cantanti inmaquillage, solo perché vedono Gene sputare sangue e fuoco. . . solo perché vedono Ace che fa fumare la sua chitarra per poi sfracellarla. . . solo perché vedono Peter volare con tutta la sua batteria. . . a tutti questi consiglio vivamente di comprarsi questo cd per capire chi sono veramente i Kiss. Poi per quelli che conoscono le loro canzoni e sono lo stesso fortemente, ostinatamente, convinti di quel che dicono. . . allora vi dico che non vi piace ilRock N Roll. . . perché è questo che sono i Kiss: i KISS SONO IL ROCK AND ROLL. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . uff!!
