Il Kokopelli è una figura preistorica presente nelle incisioni rupestri, particolarmente evidente nell'america sud-occidentale, nell'area di "Four Corners".
Rappresenta una specie di folletto intento a suonare un flauto, o qualcosa di simile cui vengono attribuite proprietà di eccellente veicolo per la fertilità. Perchè mai i Kosheen hanno intitolato il loro nuovo album Kokopelli?
Forse perchè il nuovo disco del "Dance Combo" è più intimistico ed enigmatico rispetto al precedente "Resist", estremamente solare e good mooded. O forse solo perchè il titolo si sposava bene con il nome strano della band?. Boh! Sta di fatto che questo disco piace davero parecchio e già me lo vedo in "heavy rotation" sul mio lettore.
I Kosheen sono un trio britannico formatosi all'ombra del Bristol sound. Darren Beale che suonava in una punk band, decise di buttare via tutto e di comprarsi un Atari quando incontrò Geoff Barrow dei Portishead. Assieme al socio Markee Substance incontrarono la vocalist gallese Sian Evans, ricordando nella formazione e tipo di musica gli esordi dei St. Etienne.
Dopo il grande successo dell'album di esordio, il seguito rappresenta un notevole passo avanti. Il sound si fa meno scontato, anzi è arricchito da riff di chitarre distorte e non. Il tutto è molto evidente nel brano "Wish", che per me è già un tormentone.
Anche la voce di Sian si fa più cupa, si accosta divinamente alle melodie più spigolose prodotte dai suoi musicisti.

Consiglio inoltre la cupissima "Avalanche" che ricorda qualcosa a metà tra Tricky ed i Massive Attack di "Unfinished Symphaty".
Un disco intimo, riservato, cantato da fuori verso dentro. Dal titolo misterioso, enigmatico, superstizioso. E' un disco dance, a tratti quasi da Chill Out.
Ideale per stanotte con questa temperatura insopportabile, l'afa asfissiante, la pelle ricoperta di quelle fastidiose goccioline salate.
Imperdibile.
