Ecco arrivato il nuovo album dei Lacuna Coil, un lavoro piuttosto atteso e annunciato già molto tempo addietro. L'album non presenta particolari innovazioni rispetto ai lavori precedenti, tranne qualche piccolo accostamento al commerciale che si sente in alcuni pezzi più prossimi al Nu Metal che al Gothic stile Lacuna Coil.
La voce di Christina continua a giocare ruoli importanti in questo album, mentre la voce maschile talvolta sembra fare il ruolo che fa Fred Durst nei Limp Bizkit, ma non guasta più di tanto a un lavoro che in generale è sopra la sufficienza.
Vediamo nel dettaglio:
La prima canzone, Fragile, è una perfetta introduzione di quello che è l'album, e ne porta pregi e difetti. La solita simbiosi tra le due voci viene ripresentata, mentre le distorsioni e le parti ritmiche portano il loro genere ad un ibrido gothic rock/metal americano (stile Korn per intenderci). La seconda, To The Edge, invece è una canzone più orecchiabile, con riff abbastanza buoni e una melodia che viene voglia di ricanticchiare. La terza, Our Truth, è il primo singolo estratto, e non poteva esserci scelta migliore: il coretto melodico di Christina, che sinceramente ad imitare Elisa non sta bene, era risparmiabile, ma la canzone è uno dei pezzi forti dell'album, con un ritornello che tornerà spesso in testa ai più e un testo piuttosto interessante. Il pezzo successivo, Within Me, all'inizio sembra una ballata ultracommerciale che poi però prende vigore trasformandosi nel classico pezzo Lacuna Coil che conosciamo bene (con alcune parti acustiche ben incastonate nel contesto). Devoted è il pezzo più cattivo finora, sempre in classico stile Lacuna, con un ritornello accattivante e un testo da rileggere più volte. You Create, con linee di basso semplici ma oscure e riff altrettanto apocalittici, è l'introduzione di What I See, un pezzo che ascoltato di fila con la sua intro vorresti riascoltare più e più volte; Fragments Of Faith è un bel pezzo dove però la voce maschile sembra quasi rappare, rovinando un'atmosfera quasi impeccabile. Closer è un pezzo che credo sarà il prossimo singolo, con una melodia "commerciale" (nel senso meno dispregiativo nel termine) e un'intensità molto più prossima al brit-pop degli Strokes e dei Franz Ferdinand che dei Lacuna Coil. In Visible Light, un altro classico pezzo Lacuna Coil, è un pezzo abbastanza interessante per il testo ma forse un po' troppo semplice per il resto, senza comunque perdere colpi durante i quasi 4 minuti di durata. The Game, altro possibile singolo, inizia con un'insolita melodia per poi trasformarsi in un altro bel pezzo, dimostrandoci che questa band sa tirare fuori il meglio dal loro genere. Without Fear è un pezzo rilassante, quasi una ballata, messa lì per concludere l'album in bellezza; non risulta molto interessante nè originale, però è comunque ascoltabile nel contesto generale che è questo Karmacode. Successivamente troviamo Enjoy The Silence, cover dei Depeche Mode eseguita magistralmente, con la voce di Christina che interpreta l'aspetto emotivo del pezzo alla perfezione.
Come detto nella premessa l'album è superiore alla sufficienza, un lavoro che di sicuro non ha deluso né i fans né la critica, nonostante tutti i nuovi lavori delle band più famose siano sempre bersagliati in quanto propensi alla commercializzazione. I Lacuna Coil hanno sfornato qui un singolo di tutto rispetto, anche se troppo orecchiabile per essere Lacuna Coil, mantenendo poi nel complesso una linea che non deforma l'andamento positivo dei loro lavori. L'album potrebbe avere un buonissimo impatto su certa gente come potrebbe risultare anonimo per altri, perché da un lato dimostra come la band sappia tirare fuori sempre pezzi interessanti da un genere piuttosto ristretto come il Gothic Rock mentre da un altro l'originalità è ridotta, e questo si sente soprattutto accostando una canzone di Comalies a una di Karmacode. Nel complesso il lavoro è buono.

Le voci di Andrea e della carismatica Cristina si amalgamano alla perfezione.
I Lacuna Coil possono contare su alcuni riff dall’efficacia micidiale e su una sezione ritmica che in alcuni episodi ricorda i migliori Korn.

Non scandalizza quindi ammettere che di questo disco in pochi sentivano veramente la necessità.
Da un momento all'altro le chitarre acustiche di "Within Me" fanno ritrovare un piacevole interesse all'ascolto.

È sicuramente un cd di facile ascolto, non siamo infatti di fronte ai Dream Theater o agli Opeth.
Se ci si attende un capolavoro si rimane inevitabilmente delusi, se invece lo si affronta un po' più a cuor leggero l'impressione che se ne avrà sarà migliore.

Il netto miglioramento della voce di Andrea Ferro, da sempre la più grande pecca della band, mi ha lasciato senza parole.
I Lacuna Coil stanno veramente dicendo qualcosa di nuovo nella scena metal mondiale, varcando i limiti di un genere in via di estinzione.
