Allora, sappiamo tutti che parlare in modo imparziale dei Lacuna Coil non è facilissimo perchè essendo un gruppo metal italiano importante (soprattutto) all'estero, si tiene conto del fatto che il metal italiano va sostenuto sempre e comunque. Meno male che a me di ciò frega fino a un certo punto, eh eh. Inoltre conoscendo bene solo quest'album dei suddetti, posso ritenermi più imparziale e oggettivo di chi ha già un'idea della band (sia essa positiva o negativa), prima ancora di mettersi all'ascolto. Anche così però dare un giudizio equo a "Karmacode" non è facile.
Partiamo col dire che è sicuramente un cd di facile ascolto, non siamo infatti di fronte ai Dream Theater o agli Opeth, i Lacuna in questa release si presentano un gruppo piuttosto easy listening. Puntano a colpire l'ascoltatore con refrain semplici, una produzione davvero ottima e si affidano giustamente alla bellezza della voce della cantante Cristina Scabbia. Non sono solo questi però i punti a favore di questo gruppo: troviamo infatti anche una sezione ritmica sicura di sè, quindi estremamente precisa, senza sbavature; la voce maschile è molto utilizzata in alcune tracce in cui si dedica soprattutto alle strofe mentre in altre è quasi assente, come in "Our Truth", primo singolo estratto da questo disco; le chitarre fanno il loro lavoro appesantendo adeguatamente il sound con un carattere vicino al nu metal, quindi scordiamoci assoli e virtuosismi in favore però di una gran precisione. Inoltre il disco parte bene con "Fragile", che dai primissimi secondi ci dice già che la cantante è brava e la ritmica è incalzante.
Ora arriviamo però ad alcune note dolenti del disco. Prima di tutto non tutte le canzoni sono allo stesso livello, ci sono dei passi falsi, come "Closer", che parte con un'intro affidata al bravo bassista (niente di trascendentale, non siamo certo a livelli di genialità come la storica intro di "Damage Inc." dei Metallica di "Master Of Puppets", ma non si può pretendere troppo) per poi lasciare grande spazio a tastiere di sapore quasi dance che stonano troppo con il resto del disco e che non c'entrano granchè con il genere che suona la band.
Il disco rischia in certi momenti di annoiare l'ascoltatore, complice la neanche troppo sottile somiglianza di una traccia con l'altra. Come ultima cosa l'impressione che si avrà ascoltando questo lavoro degli italiani Lacuna dipende anche molto da come ci si è predisposti rispetto ad esso, se ci si attende un capolavoro si rimane inevitabilmente delusi, se invece lo si affronta un po' più a cuor leggero l'impressione che se ne avrà sarà migliore. Sono presenti alla fine dell'album un brano cantato in italiano, "Without Fear", e una cover di "Enjoy The Silence" dei Depeche Mode piuttosto ben concepita.
In definitiva un disco di semplice approccio, che necessita però di almeno un secondo ascolto per essere meglio capito, che probabilmente non rimarrà nella storia del metal, che non può accontentare i più estremisti del metal ma che può sicuramente divertire chi è più aperto a sperimentazioni e ascolti di genere vario. Per quanto riguarda il discorso "sostegno del metal italiano" diciamo che ci possiamo ritenere soddisfatti di avere in casa un gruppo capace, preciso, pulito. Mi aspetto però dei miglioramenti nella prossima release. Aspetto anche di vederli in sede live il 24 settembre 2006 a Roma al Palacisalfa, poichè ho l'impressione che dal vivo possano dare il meglio di loro.

Le voci di Andrea e della carismatica Cristina si amalgamano alla perfezione.
I Lacuna Coil possono contare su alcuni riff dall’efficacia micidiale e su una sezione ritmica che in alcuni episodi ricorda i migliori Korn.

L'album è superiore alla sufficienza, un lavoro che di sicuro non ha deluso né i fans né la critica.
La voce di Christina continua a giocare ruoli importanti in questo album, mentre la voce maschile talvolta sembra fare il ruolo che fa Fred Durst nei Limp Bizkit.

Non scandalizza quindi ammettere che di questo disco in pochi sentivano veramente la necessità.

Il netto miglioramento della voce di Andrea Ferro, da sempre la più grande pecca della band, mi ha lasciato senza parole.
I Lacuna Coil stanno veramente dicendo qualcosa di nuovo nella scena metal mondiale, varcando i limiti di un genere in via di estinzione.
