Correva la primavera del 2004 e la notizia arrivò come un fulmine a ciel sereno: a due anni di distanza dalla data d'uscita, "Comalies" entra nella prestigiosa classifica di Billboard negli Stati Uniti. Chi se lo sarebbe mai aspettato che i Lacuna Coil, così poco lodati in patria, avrebbero fatto il botto negli Usa? Forse tutto quanto è avvenuto sulla scia del fenomeno Evanescence, ma, a differenza del gruppo americano, Cristina Scabbia & Co. hanno raggiunto questo traguardo dopo una lunga gavetta.
Un traguardo sudato dunque, frutto del lungo lavoro di una band attiva sin dalla seconda metà degli anni 90. Ciononostante, il favore del pubblico bisogna, in qualunque modo, andarlo a cercare, in quanto è risaputo che questo non premia certo band poco commerciali. In realtà i Lacuna Coil non hanno mai pianificato nulla; non sono mai stati una band che ha fatto dell'originalità il proprio punto di forza, ma un gruppo di sei ragazzi che ha sempre messo una gran passione nel proprio lavoro, continuando per la propria strada, noncuranti delle critiche ricevute in casa. Forse mille altre band di casa nostra avrebbero meritato più di loro quel posto in classifica, ma quanto accaduto è facilmente comprensibile: come tutti sanno il pubblico americano è molto più ignorante rispetto a quello europeo in fatto di metal (basti pensare che i Lacuna Coil sono stati accolti come band "figlia" degli Evanescence).
Il resto è storia: a seguito del boom di vendite, diverse tournée hanno portato la band in giro per il mondo (la tappa italiana al Gods of Metal 2005 è stata forse quella dove il pubblico è stato meno caloroso) e finalmente, dopo quattro lunghi anni arriva un nuovo album della band. Ai posteri l'ardua sentenza: il successo è stato un bene oppure un male per i nostri milanesi esportatori di musica metal? Per alcuni esso ha contribuito a rovinare del tutto una band di per sé già poco lodevole, per altri ha permesso a quest'ultima di fare il salto di qualità. Per il sottoscritto, il giudizio è immutato: successo o meno, i Lacuna Coil sono rimasti lo stesso gruppo, non eccezionale, ma discretamente bravo, di due anni fa.
Questo nuovo "Karmacode" si pone dunque sullo stesso livello del suo predecessore, ma a causa di gusti personali (che più avanti spiegherò) continuo a preferire "Comalies". A livello musicale l'album si presenta molto più diretto (è chiaro che quest'album è stato pensato per il mercato americano) ma allo stesso tempo molto più pesante nei suoni (notevole l'uso delle chitarre, che in passato rivestivano un ruolo di secondo piano, risultando spesso un semplice sottofondo per le voci dei cantanti), più originale e vario nell'insieme delle canzoni. Il netto miglioramento della voce di Andrea Ferro, da sempre la più grande pecca della band, mi ha lasciato senza parole. Un plauso speciale va senza ombra di dubbio a Cristina Scabbia, un'icona importantissima per la band, una ragazza sexy, intelligente e carismatica, e dotata di una grande voce (da brividi le tonalità basse). Analizzando canzone per canzone troviamo molti spunti interessanti come l'utilizzo di melodie orientaleggianti e ritmiche Nu Metal che, nonostante siano state inserite in maniera un po' superficiale, rendono l'ascolto meno noioso che in passato e la presenza di un quartetto d'archi che enfatizza al meglio le canzoni senza però mai sovrastare gli altri strumenti. Le canzoni che mi convincono maggiormente sono quelle dal mood più oscuro: "Fragments of Faith" e "In Visible Light" sono da annoverare tra le migliori canzoni Gothic Metal italiane.
Episodi come "Fragile", "Our Truth" e "Without Fear" sono invece quanto di più personale composto dal sestetto, veramente intricate rispetto agli standard del gruppo. Chiude la tracklist una cover di "Enjoy the Silence" dei Depeche Mode. Devo ammettere di avere apprezzato la versione dei Lacuna Coil, veramente azzeccata nelle strofe, a discapito dell'originale che non mi ha mai trasmesso nulla. Tuttavia questo esperimento, a mio parere, non è del tutto riuscito. Lo stesso vale per l'album intero, poiché nonostante tutti i pregi sopraelencati questo presenta altrettanti notevoli difetti. Innanzitutto troviamo, immancabili in ogni album i soliti, stancanti, nauseabondi episodi riempitivi: in questo caso "Devoted" (pessima) e "Closer". Inoltre la band dimostra di non saperci fare con le ballate: "Within Me" è una canzone veramente banale (siamo ai livelli del pop più scadente), e quest'album è fin troppo allegro in alcune tracce; per questi due motivi il sottoscritto continua a preferire "Comalies" nel quale, nonostante vi siano contenute molte canzoni mediocri, è onnipresente un alone malinconico e oscuro.
Tuttavia non è mia intenzione bocciare questo "Karmacode": dopo l'ascolto delle 13 canzoni, sono rimasto piacevolmente sorpreso dall'evoluzione della band. I Lacuna Coil stanno veramente dicendo qualcosa di nuovo nella scena metal mondiale, varcando i limiti di un genere in via di estinzione (il Gothic Metal con female vocals) di cui al giorno d'oggi solo i Tristania e poche altre band tengono alta la bandiera.
Un album da ascoltare, significativo per la scena metal italiana. Il prossimo potrebbe essere ancora meglio.

Le voci di Andrea e della carismatica Cristina si amalgamano alla perfezione.
I Lacuna Coil possono contare su alcuni riff dall’efficacia micidiale e su una sezione ritmica che in alcuni episodi ricorda i migliori Korn.

L'album è superiore alla sufficienza, un lavoro che di sicuro non ha deluso né i fans né la critica.
La voce di Christina continua a giocare ruoli importanti in questo album, mentre la voce maschile talvolta sembra fare il ruolo che fa Fred Durst nei Limp Bizkit.

Non scandalizza quindi ammettere che di questo disco in pochi sentivano veramente la necessità.
Da un momento all'altro le chitarre acustiche di "Within Me" fanno ritrovare un piacevole interesse all'ascolto.

È sicuramente un cd di facile ascolto, non siamo infatti di fronte ai Dream Theater o agli Opeth.
Se ci si attende un capolavoro si rimane inevitabilmente delusi, se invece lo si affronta un po' più a cuor leggero l'impressione che se ne avrà sarà migliore.
