L’ANTEPRIMA
Durante i gloriosi anni 70 si sviluppò l’arte della promozione. Non c’erano Mtv o Internet e i principali mezzi disponibili erano i concerti, i singoli da trasmettere alle radio e la carta stampata. Salvo qualche raro caso di foto promozionale o 45 giri (solo negli Stati Uniti), i Led Zeppelin si sono sempre concessi col contagocce a radio e riviste specializzate. La vera forza promozionale del gruppo era rappresentata dalle performance sul palco: mai semplici spettacoli ma eventi che legavano i presenti, con una musica travolgente e inventando lo stereotipo della divinità rock, in una sorta di telepatia musicale. Dal vivo, senza la forzata disciplina dello studio di registrazione, la loro estrema capacità di improvvisare e dilatare qualsiasi canzone, che non era mai la stessa – al contrario del famoso titolo The Song Remains The Same – portava la musica in continua evoluzione. Il concerto, insomma, era utilizzato anche come banco di prova e sperimentazione.
I dieci album in studio rappresentano una colossale macchina commerciale: duecento e più milioni di dischi venduti portano il gruppo ai vertici delle classifiche di vendita di tutti i tempi, secondi solo ai Beatles, eppure questa è solo parte della storia. Citando John Paul Jones, "il pensiero principale per la band è sempre stato la rappresentazione dal vivo".
Grazie alla pubblicazione il prossimo 26 maggio del triplo cd How The Wes Was Won, tutti potranno finalmente godere della spontanea eccitazione di un concerto dei Led Zeppelin e per molti sarà, senza mezzi termini, uno shock. How The West Was Won sarà pubblicato nei prossimi mesi in versione dvd audio. Chi posidere un impianto surround, come ha dichiarato Kevin Shirley (già con Black Crowes & Page, Iron Maiden, Dream Theater…), avrà la sensazione di essere nelle prime file nel Forum, a pochi metri dai Led Zeppelin.
Il triplo è tratto dal concerto maratona del Forum di Los Angeles del 25 giugno ’72 e da quello alla Long Beach Arena di due giorni dopo. Quella di L.A. fu una notte cui il pubblico non voleva mettere la parola fine, costringendo la band a prolungare la set list abituale con ben sei bis. Delle serate al Forum e all’Arena, entrambe straordinarie, Page ha selezionato la scaletta che rispecchia proprio la notte trionfale di Los Angeles, con la sola esclusione della cover di Louie, Louie e della successiva Thank You. È imperativo ricordare che per i Led Zeppelin la California era una seconda casa e il Forum di Los Angeles la venue preferita.
Grazie alla decisone di aprire i forzieri che custodiscono i nastri delle registrazioni live del gruppo da parte di Page, con l’approvazione di Jones e Plant, ascolteremo una Whole Lotta Love di ventitre minuti, highlight della serata, con un medley strepitoso con tutta la band a massima velocità come un treno impazzito. In questo tour, compresi i concerti del triplo cd, i Leds decisero di testare le canzoni che sarebbero poi apparse sull’album House Of The Holy del 1973, vedi Over The Hills And Far Away, molto sperimentale e con una tonalità vocale di Plant molto diversa rispetto alla versione che si troverà poi sul disco in studio, The Ocean, Dancing Days, The Crunge, quest’ultima inserita in versione strumentale in una Dazed And Confused di ben venticinque minuti.
Non è la prima volta che il gruppo pubblica un disco dal vivo. Il primo è stato la colonna sonora del film documentario The Song Remains The Same (1975), una compilation delle notti del 27-28-29 luglio ’73 al Madison Square Garden di New York, che però non rende giustizia ai leggendari concerti della band, non rispecchia la setlist di un vero e proprio show e, soprattutto, è frutto di numerosi copia-e-incolla all’interno delle canzoni da parte di Jimmy Page. La band era logora e passava da momenti ispirati ad altri sottotono. Il doppio Bbc Sessions (1997) era invece superlativo. Salvo le tracce del 27 giugno '69 al Playhouse Theatre sul primo cd e il concerto vero e proprio del Paris Theatre di Londra del primo aprile '71, si tratta però di esibizioni live senza pubblico negli studi della radio londinese. A differenza dei due live citati, How The West Was Won mostra un trionfale e incendiario concerto dei Led Zeppelin senza ritocchi.
Per la prima volta - sperando che si tratt i della prima uscita della Chronological Live Collection tanto desiderata da Jimmy Page - saremo tutti partecipi di quelle leggendarie performance che in quegli anni, e negli anni a venire, mai nessun altro gruppo riuscì ad emulare. Impressionante ritratto dei Led Zeppelin del '72, un gruppo che sul suolo americano si dava letteralmente in pasto alla platea, "How The West Was Won" è destinato a entrare nella storia dei migliori album rock live, riuscendo là dove "The Song Remains The Same" fallì

Superando di gran lunga il precendente live ufficiale 'The Song Remains The Same', questo triplo ci offre una perfetta sintesi dei nostri amatissimi Led Zeppelin at their best.
Ogni volta che li si da per defunti (artisticamente, s’intende), ecco che i nostri tornano per dimostrarci ancora una volta WHO ROCKS!!!

La qualità superba della registrazione fa risaltare ancora di più l’esaltante livello tecnico dei quattro musicisti.
Da ascoltare a pieno volume, perché una musica così non può essere ascoltata in sottofondo.

Questi 18 brani sono a dir poco straordinari!!! Quasi tre ore di magia firmata Zeppelin.

Un imperdibile occasione per compiere una cavalcata sonora in un passato divenuto storia e capire come quattro giovani inglesi giunsero … Alla Conquista del West!
La distorsione introduttiva ci catapulta senza diritto di replica ad Immigrant Song, elevandosi a prodromo imprescindibile dell’heavy metal che verrà.
