Se la fine dello scorso millennio con la pubblicazione del doppio cd BBC SESSIONS (poi ampliata ulteriormente nel 2016 con una versione maxi di 3 cd/5 vinili!) era stata per i fans dei Led Zeppelin una sorpresa in cui non in molti credevano, la release del live HOW THE WEST WAS WON nel 2003 veniva ad essere la cosiddetta uscita col botto! La discografia live del gruppo se si eccettua il disco-evento THE SONG REMAINS THE SAME, è stata nel tempo tutt’altro che copiosa, garantendo così ampia soddisfazione alle pubblicazioni ben cadenzate succedutesi negli anni. E’ giusto comunque dire che gli Zeppelin hanno foraggiato non poco il mercato dei bootlegs, sia durante il periodo di attività che in quello post, con prodotti anche di elevata qualità che con il tempo sono assurti ad una semi-ufficialità magari forse prevedibile. Una copertura temporale con l’immissione sul mercato di prodotti diciamo alternativi che fanno ancora oggi da sorprendente testimonianza di spontaneità e vigore artistico, che non sempre trapela dalla discografia ufficiale. Così FILLMORE WEST 1969 o LONDON 1969 rispecchiano appieno il fuoco degli inizi, mentre DESTROYER (Cleveland, 27 Aprile 1977) e BONZO’S LAST GIG (7 luglio 1980) il final chapter di shows – talvolta autoreferenziali e contraddistinti giustamente da qualche momento di stanca, - ma sempre ad alto potere calorifero e mandando in brodo di giuggiole anche il rocker meno accanito con titoli quali BURN LIKE A CANDLE o WILD BEACH PARTY, a documentare quel periodo irripetibile che resterà il numero otto tra i tours effettuati negli U.S.A. da parte di Page & Co..
Ai due ultimi titoli (ed in particolar modo al secondo che sembra aver fatto da riferimento anche per la cover) citati, va dato atto di aver pescato a dovere dalle date del 25 e 27 giugno 1972 tenute rispettivamente al The Forum di Inglewood ed alla Long Beach Arena, date cardine dell’ottavo U.S.A. tour dei Led Zeppelin di cui adesso è possibile godere su questo HOW THE WEST WAS WON, come un’unica esibizione. Un triplo cd (disponibile anche la versione in quadruplo vinile) che mette in mostra un suono pieno ma essenziale, ben lontano dalle serate al Madison Square Garden che tutti conosciamo, dove nelle intenzioni di questa pubblicazione resta palese il ringraziamento agli U.S.A. che al contrario della poca generosità mostrata agli esordi dalla stampa britannica, aveva sempre tributato i giusti riconoscimenti a Page, Plant, Jones e Bonham già da quella prima data tenuta a Denver il 26 dicembre 1968. Ringraziamenti che non devono però far passare in secondo piano la devozione dei quattro musicisti all’incontenibile amore per il blues (e per i suoi padri), che li porterà ad apprendere e ad elaborarne le basi forgiando un suono incandescente ed un’identità imperitura.
La distorsione introduttiva di solito ben più lunga di “LA Drone” ci catapulta senza diritto di replica ad “Immigrant Song” (tratta dalla prima serata) la cui compattezza ritmica e l’agghiacciante urlo che ne saranno sempre i tratti distintivi insieme alla potenza di un riff destinato a fare storia, elevandosi con il tempo a prodromo imprescindibile dell’heavy metal che verrà. Giusta prosecuzione è l’incandescente “Heartbreaker” che con “Black Dog” e “Over the Hills and Far Away” (queste ultime tratte invece dalla seconda serata), sono lo specchio di una esibizione al fulmicotone iniziata d appena una ventina di minuti. L’atmosfera si fa più quieta (almeno in alcuni tratti) con il blues di “Since I’ve Been Loving You” ed una interpretazione da brividi (come non potrebbe esserlo) di “Stairway to Heaven” per la cui parte di mellotron (che a suonare è ovviamente Jones), Page ricorre all’unico pescaggio fuori dalle due serate californiane, attingendo dallo show di Southampton del 22 gennaio 1973! Con “This is … “Going to California” (come in IV, posta come settima traccia), Plant introduce un buon quarto d’ora di musica confidenziale, dove a regnare sono arpeggi e corde pizzicate che fanno godere di quel clima agreste che con “That’s the Way” e lo skiffle di “Bron-Yr-Aur-Stomp”, basterebbe socchiudere gli occhi per immaginarsi verosimilmente più ad una sagra popolare che non a sud-ovest di Los Angeles. Il cd 2 si apre con la versione fiume dell’heavy psichedelico di “Dazed and Confused” ove è possibile riconoscere provenienti dalle sessioni del successore di quello che in molto ricordano con il supposto titolo di ZOSO, “The Crunge” (effettivamente finita su HOUSES OF THE HOLY), “Walter’s Walk” (dieci anni dopo sul conclusivo CODA) e le stilettate di Jimmy Page con l’archetto di violino sulle inermi corde della sua Gibson. Una sequela di melodie rilassate e l’ elegante basso di Jones in “What Is and What Should Never Be” conducono allo spensierato hard rock di “Dancing Days” ed a “Moby Dick” dove le arroventate e precise evoluzioni strumentali dei tre lasciano salire sul podio del vincitore la dirompente creatività percussiva di John The Beast Bonham! Le folgoranti tre note riprodotte su due misure di 4/4 danno il via ad una lunga esecuzione di “Whole Lotta Love” (ben 23 minuti!), dal quale grembo vengono liberate tra le altre, “Let’s Have Party”, “Boogie Chillen’” e “Going Down Slow”, che per via di un sopraffino lavoro di mixing celano i diversi chops alle vocals di Plant, avvenuti in particolare tra il quinto ed il sesto minuto. Si lascia il passo alla più recente quanto a suo modo primordiale “Rock and Roll” ed ovviamente esempio di un’incalzante 12 blues bar progression, seguita dall’ancora inedita ed energica “The Ocean”, opportunamente dedicata alla consistente massa umana presente ai concerti degli Zeps, ma che lascia trasparire dal finale del testo anche l’amorevole dedica del singer alla figlioletta Carmen Jane, allora di appena tre anni. Il finale spetta al tuffo tra i campi di cotone del Delta del Mississipi con “Bring It On Back” (seppur così citata come all’interno del medley), polverosa e discontinua, ma racchiusa in quell’omaggio a Sonny Boy Williamson II ed al blues tutto, citando quel pomo della discordia che fu ”Bring It On Home”, all’inizio ed alla fine del brano.
Non solo un prodotto destinato ad essere acquistato a tutti i costi, ma anche un’esaustiva summa della carriera della band inglese fino a quel momento. Tra il riverbero di IV e un inatteso capolavoro di là da venire quale HOUSES OF THE HOLY, rivela come il gruppo di Jimmy Page cominciasse a subire quella naturale metamorfosi che lo portava a superare la sottile linea che distingue due termini solo apparentemente affini come leggenda ed onnipotenza. Un imperdibile occasione per compiere una cavalcata sonora in un passato divenuto storia e capire come quattro giovani inglesi giunsero … Alla Conquista del West!

Superando di gran lunga il precendente live ufficiale 'The Song Remains The Same', questo triplo ci offre una perfetta sintesi dei nostri amatissimi Led Zeppelin at their best.
Ogni volta che li si da per defunti (artisticamente, s’intende), ecco che i nostri tornano per dimostrarci ancora una volta WHO ROCKS!!!

La vera forza promozionale del gruppo era rappresentata dalle performance sul palco: mai semplici spettacoli ma eventi che legavano i presenti.
How The West Was Won è destinato a entrare nella storia dei migliori album rock live, riuscendo là dove The Song Remains The Same fallì.

La qualità superba della registrazione fa risaltare ancora di più l’esaltante livello tecnico dei quattro musicisti.
Da ascoltare a pieno volume, perché una musica così non può essere ascoltata in sottofondo.
