Prima di iniziare con la recensione di questo meraviglioso disco, vi pongo una domanda. Secondo voi la magia esiste? Io penso proprio di sì. Molti di voi mi prenderanno per pazzo, ma provate ad ascoltare questo album Vigilante dei Magnum, e cambierete subito idea. Il gruppo in questione è stato formato in Inghilterra nel 1972 da Bob Catley (voce) e Tony Clarkin (chitarra) e sono (più o meno) noti per aver scritto pagine di importanza inconfutabile per l'AOR con la trilogia "On A Storyteller's Night" (1985), "Vigilante" (1986) e "Wings Of Heaven" (1988).
Siete pronti per iniziare questo fantastico viaggio carico di sogni e magia?
Allora si parte con una magnifica opener come la sognante "Lonely Night", dotata di un'atmosfera molto suggestiva, grazie anche alla bellissima voce di Catley. Notare che anche se la canzone risulta molto easy-listening può essere apprezzata anche dagli amanti dell'Hard Rock. Questa caratteristica si ritoverà in quasi tutte le altre tracce del disco. Altri episodi ricchi di sogni come "Lonely Night" sono la romantica ballad "Need A Lot Of Love", "Midnight (You Won't Be Sleeping)", che si avvale di un ottimo uso della chitarra acustica, "Back Street Kid", che pur non essendo una ballad riesce a ricreare l'atmosfera delle canzoni già citate, e la magnifica e commovente ballad "When The World Comes Down", tra le migliori prove del gruppo in assoluto.
Ma questo non vi faccia pensare che i Magnum siano la solita band sdolcinata sfornaballad, anzi. Sono presenti vere e proprie gemme Hard Rock, come "Red On The Highway" e "Holy Rider", che ricordano molto i Queen (d'altra parte, alla produzione c'è un certo Roger Taylor...), "Sometime Love" e la splendida title-track, in cui risulta molto efficace chitarra-tastiera ed in cui è presente una batteria tonicissima.
Questa è la fine di un grande album che, come già spiegato prima, insieme a "On A Storyteller's Night" e "Wings Of Heaven" ha profondamente influenzato l'AOR.
