Il 2007 da poco trascorso è stato un anno memorabile per il metal: da una parte i Dream Theater di "Systematic Chaos", con le perle "The Ministry Of Lost Souls" e "In The Presence Of The Enemies pt.2", e dall'altra i Manowar, i Defenders del True Metal, che hanno sfornato un capolavoro assoluto, il loro miglior disco dai tempi di "Kings Of Metal".
"Gods Of War" è un concept album sulla mitologia nordica che fonde Epic, Symphonic e Power in un calderone magico assolutamente affascinante ed avvincente, come un film senza immagini: un album da ascoltare viaggiando con la fantasia tra divinità nordiche, guerrieri, battaglie e magie. Si inizia con "Overture To The Hymn Of The Immortal Warriors": qui il discorso non è se si tratta di metal o di musica classica: questo è un capolavoro sinfonico di rara potenza: gli ottoni danno maestosità e i cosi femminili e gli archi danno intensità e pathos, creando un epico turbinio che spalanca le porte alla suggestiva "The Ascension", che inizia con dei cori, che lasciano spazio a una maestosa voce narrante (caratteristica propria di quest'album) e infine a un ispiratissimo Eric Adams. Poi tutto cambia: Scott Columbus e Joey DeMaio irrompono come vichingi all'assalto dando inizio alla magnifica "King Of Kings", canzone molto veloce e power, assolutamente trascinante, con un bell'intermezzo sinfonico e lento, un po' in stile "Warriors Of The World United". Con "Army Of The Dead pt.1" le acque tornano a calmarsi: questa traccia è un bellissimo coro a cappella, non capisco proprio chi lo considera una boiata! Bene, ecco che irrompe Sleipnir (Slepnir nella mitologia wotanista è il cavallo di Odino, e infatti nell'intro si sente lo scalpiccio degli zoccoli) pezzo straordinario soprattutto per quel ritornello che varrebbe da solo l'ascolto dell'album, destinato probabilmente a diventare un classico in sede live.
"Loki God Of Fire" è più veloce, con un grandissimo Joey DeMaio che fa vibrare il suo mitico basso come un martello pneumatico. (per chi non lo sapesse Loki è il dio del fuoco, fratello malvagio di Odino, che combatterà nel ragnarok al fianco dei giganti). Molto bene, ora è il turno della ballata: dopo l'orgia del precedente "Warriors Of The World" che aveva portato "Fight For Freedom", "Swords In The Wind" e "An American Trilogy" qui c'è solo "Blood Brothers", che si avvicina molto come sonorità a "Master Of The Wind", ovvero è soffusa, toccante e profonda come pochissime altre canzoni di Manowar. "Overture To Odin" è un'altro esperimento sinfonico, bello ma stavolta un po' fine a se stesso, seguito da "The Blood Of Odin", dove in narratore ci racconta in toni molto drammatici il mito di Odino, che sacrificò un occhio per bere al pozzo della saggezza, acquisendo così gli attributi di divinità della poesia, della stregonaria e della morte. Bene, finalmente si arriva a "Sons Of Odin", lanciata da un riffone di chitarra stratosferico, che ci riporta al power e all'headbanging, con un altro killer chorus memorabile. "Glory Majesty Unity" è la preghiera del guerriero, l'invocazione della protezione divina, il richiamo ai valori dell'onore e dell'orgoglio prima della battaglia, che inizia con la maestosa titletrack: sette minuti di pura epicità dove chitarre e ottoni si alternano alla prestazione creando un'atmosfera da ragnarok: solenne, maestosa e battagliera. Impressionante l'acuto finale di Eric Adams.
La calma dopo la tempesta è sancita da "Army Of The Dead pt.2", identica alla pt.1 tranne che per la bella into organistica. Finalmente si arriva a "Odin", canzone che riprende in parte il mood di vecchi pezzi dei Manowar come "Each Dawn I Die": stupenda, misteriosa e intrigante, con un finale mozzafiato che riprende il tema di "Army Of The Dead". Il nostro viaggio nel Valhalla era iniziato con l'Overture, e ora si chiude con "Hymn Of The Immortal Warriors": solenne, sofferta, epica, semplicemente emozionante e liberatoria, che chiude il viaggio nel miglior modo possibile. Ora la battaglia è finita e i guerrieri vaolorosi sono finalmente entrati alla Corte di Odino, il Valhalla, eppure i nostri 4 eroi avevano lì pronto un pezzone che spacca: "Die For Metal", e sarebbe stato un peccato non inserirlo. Qui è accreditata come bonus track (come la leggandaria "Pleasure Slave"), e ribadisce l'eterna lotta dei Man O' War contro i poser e il false metal.
"Gods Of War" è un capolavoro, altamente consigliato non solo ai defenders ma anche a tutti gli amanti della buona musica.

La musica dei Manowar è davvero esaltante se si prendono con umorismo gli atteggiamenti 'alla Conan'.
Non è esagerato infatti parlare quasi di un 'film da ascoltare'.

‘Blood Brothers’ è veramente una canzone che ti farebbe lasciare casa per partire in battaglia....da veramente una carica superba.
