Non mi reputo certo il classico fan-guerriero vestito di borchie e pelliccia di bisonte, che in prima fila ai concerti con le braccia alzate nel tipico gesto inneggia ai quattro Dei del Metal (e già qui, se si vede la faccia del chitarrista, ti cascano i maroni…) preso dall'estasi della gloria immortale, però non bisogna essere affrettati con le decisioni.
Voglio dire, la musica dei Manowar è davvero esaltante se si prendono con umorismo gli atteggiamenti "alla Conan", i festival della gnocca su moto durante i live (che comunque ci stanno sempre bene) e tutto il contorno goliardico di una band composta da musicisti senza dubbio eccellenti tecnicamente, un pochino ripetititvi stilisticamente. Essi infatti fanno parte di quel club rinomato di band che hanno fondato la propria carriera sulla ripetizione (Ac/Dc, Slayer, ecc. ), ma quello che fanno lo fanno bene, altrochè. In particolare per i Manowar avevo notato negli ultimi anni un lento passaggio a sonorità più epiche e sinfoniche, con orchestrazioni pompose sorrette da cori evocativi.
In quest'ultimo "Gods Of War" però hanno davvero calcato la mano: la prima traccia, "Overture to the Himn of the Immortal Warriors" (con un titolo così come si fa a non sentirsi un pò epici?!… ) è una composizione sinfonica, appunto, di oltre 6 minuti che mette subito in chiaro le cose sia sul livello epico adottato questa volta, sia sulla quantità innominabile di denaro speso per registare tale opera magna. La seconda "The Ascension" è una specie di introduzione, sempre sinfonica ma con una voce narrante di sottofondo (scommetto che si tratta di Christopher Lee!), al primo brano metal vero e proprio, "King of Kings": si parte sparati e con un accenno di cattiveria nella voce molto in forma di Eric Adams, ritornello epico perfetto da urlare per una marea di fan esaltati, assolo barocco come condimento, insomma nulla di nuovo sotto il sole.
Ma prima ho detto che è un album più sinfonico, e infatti la successiva "Army of the Dead, part 1" si compone di un coro "alpinesco" senza alcuna schitarrata o doppio pedale furioso. Così saranno anche le prossime "Overture to Odin", "The Blood of Odin", "Glory Majesty Unity" e "Army of the Dead, part 2", in pratica su quindici pezzi la metà circa sono suonati da un'orchestra e non da DeMaio e soci.
Alcuni di essi contengono "recite vocali" molto cinematografiche che possono aiutare l'immedesimazione nel contesto mitologico, non è esagerato infatti parlare quasi di un "film da ascoltare" e viene il sospetto che l'intento fosse quello di creare una possibile colonna sonora per un eventuale seguito di Excalibur o per la trasposizione cinematografica del videogame di successo War of Warcraft. Per quanto riguarda i rimasugli metal presenti (perchè davvero rischiano di essere schiacciati dalla magniloquenza dei brani orchestrati), non si grida certo al miracolo, sono ascoltabili e in linea con l'intera produzione dei quattro. C'è anche spazio per una ballata in stile "Master of the Wind" (non certo a quel livello!) con la settima traccia dal titolo "Blood Brothers". Solo un piccolo appunto personale per l'ultima bonus track "Die For Metal" (ignoro se essa sia presente anche nelle edizioni standard), palesemente dedicata ai fan e in generale al metallaro medio, tutto birra e fratellanza, ma che forse stona con la pseudo-serietà del resto. D'altronde forse è per questo che è una bonus track…
A quanto ne so, dovrebbero essere uscite tre edizioni diverse, io ovviamente mi sono accaparrato quella limitata con copertina in simil-pelle nera e custodia in acciaio (latta) alla modica cifra di 27 sacchi (ma è compreso un dvd del making of assolutamente inutile)!
Tirando le somme, questo "Gods of War" (ricordo che è la prima opera dedicata a un concept su gli dei della guerra) piacerà senza riserve al fan della prima riga della recensione, ma anche a chi apprezza, come me, i Manowar in modo più sobrio; personalmente avrei preferito più metal e meno sinfonia, pur non togliendo nulla alla piacevolezza sonora di violini, trombe e organi ecclesiastici.
