Il disco che ha fatto gridare: "Eccola finalmente la Maria che conoscevamo!"
Secondo capitolo della carriera solista di Maria McKee. Siamo nel 1993, a ben 4 anni dal primo lavoro. Le cose sono un po' cambiate. Innanzitutto, nel 1991 Maria ottiene il suo più grande (e unico) successo, numero uno in UK per 4 settimane, così come in quasi tutto il mondo, con il singolo "Show Me Heaven", tratto dalla colonna sonora del famigerato film "Giorni Di Tuono" con Tom Cruise e Nicole Kidman (il film che li fece incontrare e innamorare). Sì ragazzi era proprio lei! Anche se molto ma molto zucchero e miele.
La Geffen, la sua casa discografica, rimane molto speranzosa di poter continuare sulla falsariga di questo successo, ma Maria non ci sta. Via Mitchell Froom, produttore artificioso dell'album precedente, e benvenuto a Gorge Drakoulias, scopritore e mentore di gruppi rock come i Black Crowes e dei Jayhawkes (presenti nel disco). "You Gotta Sin To Get Saved" (ovvero "Devi Peccare Per Essere Salvato") si rifà, quindi, a un rock sbarazzino tipico degli anni '70, molto poco incline alla plasticità. La prima differenza che si riscontra rispetto al disco precedente è sicuramente lo spirito generale che permea tutto l'album, un sorta di spensieratezza e felicità che fa subito pensare alle jam sessions o anche a delle improvvisazioni per puro divertimento. Se il rock è la base delle 10 canzoni che compongono l'album, emergono anche molte influenze country ("Only Once" e "Precious Time"), pop ("I Can't Make It Alone", cover di Carole King), ma soprattutto soul come dimostrano i coretti gospel in "I'm Gonna Soothe You", "I Forgive You" e "Why Wasn't I More Grateful (When Life Is Sweet)". Tra tutte spiccano però altre due cover, questa volta di Van Morrison ("My Lonely Sad Eyes" e "The Way Young Lovers Do"), che testimoniano la crescita interpretativa e maturità vocale di quest'artista.
Non è un disco che di primo acchito ti può far impazzire, sono necessari ripetuti ascolti. Il materiale può risultare all'apparenza a tratti monotono e a tratti "gia sentito", ma dopo un profondo ascolto si può facilmente comprendere come "You Gotta Sin To Get Saved" sia tutt'ora considerato dalla stragrande maggioranza dei fan "il" disco di Maria McKee.
