Il disco in questione è il capolavoro del gruppo, dall'iniziale, meravigliosa danza for the lovers, "Fade Into You", a "Mary of Silence" tetra favola apocrifa in odor di "le scioccanti confessioni della confraternita", che incede con passi felpati lugubri, sfiorando di poco la magia rituale dei Dead Can Dance e dei Doors, “Blue Light” e le sue sontuose movenze anni ‘50 da bicchiere mezzo vuoto , "Five String Serenade" cover dei Love dove l'atmosfera ipnotica viene eclissata dal gusto pop della band, sino alla title track, mantra velvetiano slowcore carica di spleen che chiude l'album. Queste sono canzoni nate di mattina appena svegli "mentre il sole colora di rosso il cielo sopra un vecchio cimitero e tu non sei qui con me". Hope Sandoval che ti sussurra indolente e dolente tra le trame: "finirai addormentato o innamorato tra le pieghe di questo disco". Senza dubbio la voce definitiva della malinconia, Hope è la Emily G. Dickinson della generazione "Narcolettica".
Malinconici fantasmi di periferia, i Mazzy Star sono l'ultimo anelito di cultura gotica accessibile sotto forma di ballad nella musica pop americana, si sente che sono figli della scena paisley underground.
