Questo disco avrebbe dovuto introdurre in musica un nuovo concetto di psichedelia, mescolando un po' di Flaming Lips, un po' di Soft Boys e un po' di maestri del passato, Red Krayola su tutti.
Una formazione a 6 però non è certo l'approccio migliore, anzi... Nel complesso i risultati tendono allo scoordinamento, raggiunto proprio quando sembrava che il sound si stesse assestando. Troppo caotici a tratti, potrebbero sembrare a primo ascolto una brutta copia dei Flaming Lips.. andando avanti nel disco ti accorgi che forse è proprio quello il loro intento.
La ricerca della forma libera, della struttura astratta, non è altro che un pretesto per avviare il decennio a una sperimentazione fine a sè stessa, rumoristico-mantrale, con un caos imperante che a momenti sfocia nel disturbo sensitivo. Si possono definire riusciti solo alcun pezzi, come "Chasing a bee", delizioso giro acustico ultra-orchestrale, e "Smooth Syringe", per drones chitarristico. Insomma, il raggiungimento di uno stato d'estasi non è diretto, ma forzato e imposto, con atmosfere malate che quasi offendono la purezza di un Neil Young o di un David Thomas.
I Mercury Rev, un prodotto studiato a tavolino e lanciato in un America che nel '91 era già stanca del grunge, del metal, del punk, e stava vedendo la luce soltanto con un favoloso periodo hip-hop. "Yerself is Steam" viene definito da molti un capolavoro degli anni '90. Piero gli dà 9, molti ne parlano bene.. Il mio parere è che sono lo specchio opaco di un bad-trip radiofonico, con discrete qualità strettamente riconducibili all'individualismo.
Fortunatamente l'allegro sestetto troverà un posto nelle classifiche americane con il postumo "Deserter's song", che segna il ritorno alla canzonetta e all'orecchiabilità, meno pretenzioso, aulico e barocco, pop e jazz da dopolavoro.
Caos non primordiale, ma immaturo e sfarzoso.

Uno dei dischi più belli del rock psichedelico: 'Yerself Is Steam', un album intenso, allucinato, selvaggio.
'Very Sleepy Rivers', con la sua melodia indiana e il cantato isterico, trascina la mente verso l’oblio.
