Anno 1991. Una band di Buffalo chiamata Mercury Rev decide di pubblicare su pellicola da 35 mm alcune canzoni composte per accompagnare le immagini di film girati da loro compagni di college. Quello che ne esce (e che verrà poi pubblicato in formati più accessibili) è uno dei dischi più belli del rock psichedelico: "Yerself Is Steam", un album intenso, allucinato, selvaggio.
Tutto parte con la cantilena ubriaca e distorta di "Chasing A Bee", costruita su una melodia in stile Neil Young che man mano viene soffocata da feedback assordanti, con un finale di canzone accompagnato da un flauto fiabesco. Nei solchi di "Yerself Is Steam" si ritrovano poi cavalcate selvagge e tirate come "Syringe Mouth" (un ipotetico ibrido tra Pixies e Flaming Lips), e "Sweet Oddysee Of A Cancer Cell T'Th'Center Of Yer Heart", giocata su un'alternanza fra stasi minacciosa e caotici vortici sonori che ricordano i Velvet Underground. Ma anche di più: "Blue And Black" è un brano dall'umore gotico accompagnato da un arrangiamento orchestrale che non sfigurerebbe in una colonna sonora hollywodiana, "Frittering" propone una struggente melodia pinkfloydiana che galleggia nell'aria come una nuvola per 8 minuti, "Coney Island Cyclone" un bel brano rock imbastito sul giro di chitarra di "Walk On The Wild Side". E alla fine arriva il lunghissimo mantra di "Very Sleepy Rivers", che con la sua melodia indiana e il suo cantato isterico trascina la mente dell'ascoltatore verso l'oblio, a termine di un viaggio inimmaginabile.
