Parlare (ancora) dei Metallica oggi, dopo gli ultimi anni decisamente deludenti, scatena sempre grosse discussioni, polemiche e battibecchi. Mettiamo subito le cose in chiaro: qui si parla dei Metallica dei tempi d'oro (anzi prima), e se ne avete le tasche piene della band di Hetfield, o non l'avete mai amata, non leggete nemmeno questo pezzo: è dedicato a tutti i Metallers che venerano e rispettano i 4 di Frisco per quanto (tanto) di buono hanno fatto con i loro primi 5, grandi, album. Il resto non conta.
"The Bay Area Early Days" contiene delle registrazioni live del 1981, ed è stato pubblicato in varie versioni (1982, 1997, 2005), mantenendo una qualità audio molto bassa: per questo gli avrei dato 4 stelle e mezzo, ma visto che non è possibile gli dò un 5 brillante, degnissimo (se non riduttivo) per le intramontabili canzoni contenute. Il disco è un pezzo storico per tante ragioni.
Innanzitutto è da pelle d'oca sentire pezzi storici di tale portata suonati da ragazzini ancora sconosciuti, che non avrebbero immaginato mai, in quel momento, di diventare quello che sarebbero diventati: una leggenda. Poi fa impressione immaginare la band al completo in una delle primissime formazioni, cioè con Ron McGovney al basso e Dave Mustaine alla chitarra: Ron lascerà presto la band dopo i continui diverbi col bizzoso Mustaine, che una volta arrivò a versargli birra sulle corde del basso elettrico! Lo stesso Mustaine sarà cacciato per intemperanze dalla band, e ne formerà un'altra (i Megadeth), altrettanto grandiosa.
La vera chicca dell'album è sentire i Metallica suonare "The Mechanix", una canzone attribuita ai Megadeth nel loro album d'esordio di 4 anni più tardi: infatti la song fu scritta da Mustaine, che ne mantenne sempre i diritti, mentre i 'tallica la riproporranno con testo e musica diversi intitolandola "The Four Horsemen". Dopo l'iniziale "Hit The Lights", il primo fuoco del gruppo, James scatena una violentissima "Seek & Destroy". Seguono altri pezzi trascinanti e intramontabili come "Jump In The Fire" e "Motorbreath", dedicata ai Motorhead. Presente anche "Phantom Lord". Il tutto si conclude con la meravigliosa "Metal Militia", grido di battaglia e orgoglio di appartenenza al metallo alla quale ogni vero metallers dovrebbe essere fedele (ma che ultimamente gli stessi Metallica, ahinoi, sembrano aver rinnegato). Riff e assoli si susseguono, la batteria incalza pestante, i vocalizzi trascinano l'ascoltatore grazie ai primi bagliori del thrash metal.
Ho ripescato questo vecchio cimelio perchè merita di esser ascoltato dai cultori del genere. Gli anni della Bay Area saranno anche passati, ma sulla nostra pelle non finiranno mai di far vibrare sensazioni indescrivibili.
