I Moby Grape, formatisi a San Francisco nel 1966 per mano del batterista dei Jefferson Airplane, Skip Spence, escono con questa loro opera prima nonché eponima nel lontano 1967.
Molti considerano quest'album psichedelico anche se di psichedelico a ben poco. Forse vengono fuorviati dal fatto che Skip Spence abbia militato tra le fila degli "iperpsichedelici" Jefferson Airplane. L'album invece ha forti venature blues e qualche influenza country.
Su una cosa comunque si può essere certamente d'accordo: Quest'album può essere considerato come "il miglior disco d'esordio della Storia del rock" e quindi la miglior opera prima di tutti i tempi.
Opener dell'album è: "Hey Grandma" intrisa di meravigliose melodie beat e fantastiche amalgame vocali a cui partecipano tutti e cinque i componenti della band. Sulla falsariga del brano di apertura suonano anche "Fall on You" e "Changes".
La composizione che più affascina l'ascoltatore comunque credo sia "Indifference". La traccia mostra tutto il genio creativo di Skip Spence (nonché le massicce dosi di LSD di cui faceva uso).
Il brano che invece prende al primo ascolto per la sua orecchiabilità è: "Come in the Morning". Questa traccia deve tutto il suo fascino allo splendido giro di basso e ai soliti ma pur sempre straordinari vocalizzi.
Pausa caffé ascoltando la lenta e corta ballata "Naked, If I Want To" per poi ricominciare con la sensuale e ruffiana "Someday".
Purtroppo, cari lettori, la vita è strana e così, causa cattivo management e sfighe varie (leggi droga e problemi con la giustizia) i Moby Grape da "Nuova e Grande Promessa Del Rock Californiano" passarono velocemente al titolo di "Grande Promessa Mancata" scomparendo dalla scena musicale che conta.
