Sunny Sundae Smile, prima uscita della band targata Lazy Records (breve e stressante parentesi con la label) consiste in 4 tracce registrate nel 1987 che vedono per l'ultima volta la partecipazione del vocalist David Conway.
Dopo varie cadute economiche, continui trasferimenti per tutta Europa e problemi di salute, il giovane decide infatti di dedicarsi alla passione per la scrittura abbandonando quel mondo surreale che non ha visto ancora la vera e propria alba.
Lo stile dei brani, dinamico ed irrequieto con Colm che picchia duro, presenta l'allora tipica somiglianza accentuata dalla critica con i coetanei Jesus And Mary Chain.
Sylvie's Head con quelle reminescenze post-punk di diritto e la velocità con cui si susseguono la titletrack, Paint A Rainbow e Kiss The Eclipse coi cori a go-go in salsa sixties.
Arriva la seconda parte (non priva di ulteriore sfiga) con l'audizione e l'ingresso della musa Bilinda Butcher. Tutti gli altri erano soltanto pessimi imitatori di Morrissey, afferma Shields.
L'aggettivo dreamy si addice perfettamente alla veste canora della new entry, e l'album Ecstasy (pubblicato successivamente assieme al singolo Strawberry Wine) entra nella cerchia dei lavori che brillano maggiormente tra la fine degli '80 e l'inizio dei '90.
Due decadi che vedono fondere le atmosfere dorate della prima con la rassegnazione acida della seconda.
