Approssimativamente, tra il 1969 ed il 1975 il famigerato progressive rock vide il suo periodo di massima gloria, dal terremotante esordio dei King Crimson fino al declino di gruppi come Genesis, Van Der Graaf Generator e Yes verso scioglimenti, cambi di rotta o malinconiche autocitazioni ad oltranza.
Nell'arco di questo lustro, decine e decine di band cercarono di risalire il pendio dell'underground in cerca del grande pubblico, con esiti più o meno fortunati. I Nektar, band inglese trapiantata nella scena tedesca, furono autori di una manciata di validi album che, con intuizioni colte, puntavano al rock inglese assorbendo alcuni germi della musica cosmica di Tangerine Dream e soci. Il loro migliore lascito rimane probabilmente questo "A Tab In The Ocean", del 1972, un valido connubio di progressive "solare" che tocca lidi più atmosferici.
Tecnicamente l'ensemble si muove bene, pur senza mostrare particolare padronanza virtuosistica, infilando tessuti rock melodiosi su basi ritmiche precise ed interessanti. In particolare, uno dei punti di forza di questo LP è la base basso/batteria, il primo melodico e pulito, la seconda raffinata e di scuola jazz. Oltre alla title-track, una lunga suite dove il gruppo declama l'ammirazione verso gli Yes e le loro raffinate strutture, il capolavoro dell'album rimane la splendida "Desolation Valley", potente e decisamente ispirata.
Le influenze della scena mitteleuropea si sentono, anche se non sono del tutto in evidenza, grazie a tastiere e chitarre dilatate che dipingono paesaggi cosmici e di grande respiro, ma che non soffocano il rock di base.
Nonostante le ottime premesse, non tutto l'album si mantiene su livelli elevati, con un paio di tracce meno incisive ed una generale incertezza nelle parti vocali, che provano a raggiungere gli acuti di Jon Anderson risultando spesso deboli. Il tutto va a pesare sulla personalità del gruppo, che rimane fortemente debitore oltre che ai già citati Yes, anche ai primi favolistici Genesis. Sicuramente rimane un'opera interessante, per cultori del genere, magari stanchi del millesimo ascolto di Fragile.

Invece questo secondo lavoro di studio è probabilmente il miglior risultato dei Nektar della loro carriera.
I Nektar sono riusciti in maniera egregia ad attingere da entrambi gli ambienti musicali lasciandoci dischi che ancora adesso risultano ascoltabili e validissimi ai nostri giorni.
