Sgombero subito il campo dagli equivoci: stiamo parlando di musica pop. Evitiamo paragoni impegnativi e poco opportuni: il pop anni '80 è fatto per scorrere tranquillo nell'autoradio o dalla filodiffusione. Le melodie sono molto orecchiabili ed i testi leggeri quanto basta per essere ascoltati distrattamente.
Brotherhood, datato 1986, quarto album a firma New Order, contiene nove tracce di buona musica pop. Rispetto ad altri album del terzetto mancuniano, come il notissimo Power, Corruption&Lies, a mio parere beneficia di una maggiore omogeneità complessiva, senza una cesura stilistica netta tra i brani elettronici e quelli new-wave. I testi, in omaggio all'individualismo di quegli anni Ottanta, parlano sempre di amore struggente & sentimenti affini. Di positivo c'è la musica: sia le melodie che gli arrangiamenti, pur nella loro semplicità, sono indovinati.
Il disco inizia con Paradise, un electro-pop cui i controcanti ed i synth alla Depeche Mode danno un certo spessore. Weirdo propone il volto più new-wave dei New Order: un pezzo svelto, venatamente malinconico, in cui la melodia facile facile è sorretta da un gran lavoro del basso di Hook. As It Is When It Was è una ballata romantica mid-tempo, con il solito “ riffone” di basso ed un bel finale in crescendo. Con Broken Promises il gruppo tenta la strada dell'atmosfera tesa, uscendo, forse, un po' fuori dai suoi registri espressivi. Way of Life è un altro pezzo new-wave con una vistosa griffe New Order: da ricordare il solito giro di basso di Hook ed un paio di felici interventi chitarristici di Sumner. A questo punto, nel 1986, si sarebbe dovuto girare il 33 giri. . .
Il lato B si apriva con Bizarre Love Triangle, un pezzo elettronico che all'epoca spopolò nelle discoteche di mezzo mondo: risentito oggi, suona piuttosto “ vecchio” . Dopo un buon inizio acustico, quasi soffuso, All Day Long si perde con gli interventi dei synth troppo solenni, quasi epici. L'electro-pop di Angel Dust sembra quasi “ giurassico” oggi, A. D. 2006. Il finale è affidato a Every Little Counts, un bel lento d'atmosfera cantato quasi sottovoce da Sumner.
